On Saturday, August 8th, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., @citizensforeaston invites the community to spend a late-summer day exploring the working farms, family orchards, and small producers that make Easton, Connecticut, one of the last true agricultural pockets in southwestern Connecticut. This year’s tour is held in loving memory of Jane Paley.

Start at Samuel Staples Elementary School Pavilion, home base for the day, where you can pick up your tour map, which entitles you to special treats at each farm. Browse CFE’s community project info, and let the kids loose on an activity sheet. From there, it’s a self-guided day of stops across town:

🐐 Meet the animals — goats, bunnies, and pigs at Farm to Heart’s petting farm; a working milking herd (twin calves included!) at @shaggycoosfarm ; and hands-on demos in wool felting, peg-loom weaving, and composting at @bluebuttonfarm .

🐝 Go behind the scenes — Howland Blackiston, author of Beekeeping for Dummies, opens a live hive at On Golden Pond Apiary with talks at 11am, 12pm, and 1pm, plus honey tastings and mead for the 21-and-over crowd. @jlorchids offers an orchid greenhouse walkthrough at 10:30am, and @gilbertiesorganics — New England’s first certified organic greenhouse farm — runs guided tours of its Easton grounds all day.

🌻 Pick, cut, and taste —head over to an Easton treasure, Patty Popp’s @sporthillfarm , where you can get free henna tattoos, delicious treats, and a generous discount for map holders. Grab a beautiful sample of organic botanical skincare from @risingirisfarm .-Cut-your-own sunflowers and a farm stand at Fishbowl Farm (15% off purchases over $25 for map holders), Pick-YourOwn at @silvermansfarm (free gelato for every map-holding group!) and @sanfordhillfar (25% off produce), plus honor-system farm stands at @palmierifarm , @shaggycoosfarm and @sabiafarmstand . Get produce samples and free feed for the chickens at @sherwoodfarm - then swing by @greisers to end your day and shop local and meet your neighbors! 🐷🐐🐓🐖🥛🍑🌽 @connecticut_bucketlist @eastonobserver @eastongardenclub

Six years ago I brought this little Vanda online from @jlorchids. This week it decided to show off yet again! Worth the wait. 💜

Stelis sp.

This beauty has been following me since 2015. The plant came from @jlorchids who attended the Eastern Canada Orchid Society show. The society does not exist anymore.

Back then, I was living in a studio (bachelor apartment) where I had a small orchid shelf where I could barely control temperature and humidity. I have grown it in int-warm, intermediate and cool temperatures, potted or mounted (now), kept it moist all the time or allowing it to dry between waterings and the thing made it through all of this.

It is now growing in my cool growroom and blooms several times a year.

Had a fun road trip to J&L Orchids in Easton, CT which has been a wishlist item for me for a couple years. So I took the spontaneity and drive up there. I was just in awe of their massive specimen plants. They have so many miniature orchids for sale and I found some odds and ends ( I love the odd ones), if you are into miniature orchids @jlorchids is where you have to visit. It was a pleasure to see and talk to the owner Cordelia there. And I came home with just a few more orchids… highlighted are the massive Trichosalpinx chamaelepanthes, Phymatidium tillandsioides, and cute mats of Pleurothallis grobyi. #orchid #orchidflower #orchidlovers

MEET OUR VENDORS: 𝗝&𝗟 𝗢𝗥𝗖𝗛𝗜𝗗𝗦

𝗔𝗕𝗢𝗨𝗧 𝗨𝗦:

J&L Orchids is a nursery that began nearly 50 years ago in a quiet, Connecticut town. We specialize in miniature orchids that can be grown in the house and have a long history in the orchid-growing community around the world.

Our specialty areas are unusual species, miniatures, masdevallias, draculas and other pleurothallidinae. Although we sell predominately species, we were influential in starting the revival in masdevallia hybridizing in the early 1980's and continue to sell a variety of these colorful hybrids.
Thank you for your business, and we hope that we can help you see the value in adopting these challenging plants into your life as they reward you with some of the most impressive flowers and foliage that exist.

𝗣𝗥𝗘-𝗢𝗥𝗗𝗘𝗥𝗦:
Use code MOS25 to save 10%.

Valid for orders received until the morning of Wednesday Oct 29th 2025, but earlier orders are encouraged to secure plants and for better selection.

Choose Pick Up in person, and no shipping costs will be charged. Orders can be paid through the website or at the show.

My favorite orchid I own is at it again! This is a brassia oncidium hybrid called Maclellanara Yellow Star. I bought it from J&L Orchids - conveniently right in my town! I’ve had a few reblooms since I’ve owned it, and this is the second bloom this year. Flowers are opening now and will probably stay for 3-4 weeks. It’s a showstopper.
