All praise, glory and thanks be to God for the success of Siloam's first advent outreach event!

As a community, this event really did bring us much closer together. Working with each other, having late night practices, being vulnerable in our testimonies and sharings, and continuously praying with and for each other. The Lord truly prepared us in this way to then share our faith with others in our invitations to our outreach event.

Though I am pretty tired physically after all this, I can say that spiritually there's a wellspring of joy and hope within. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

John Marie Tan (@jmaginative), NUS DID Class of 2022

John finds inspiration through observing the behaviours that people have adopted, like the affordance of tissue packets to chope tables, recognising that these are the most authentic insights into our subconscious behaviour that makes good design unnoticeable.

Sensibly Delightful Feedback: Sensory feedback you don't usually get but probably want ✨

Delightfulness and functionality are often seen as two opposite ends of a spectrum. The ideation framework that John has created facilitates the curation of sensibly delightful feedback in everyday objects that borders on becoming gimmicky, but provides just enough function not to, by using sensory feedback as an indicator that creates a delightful interaction whilst reassuring the user of the objects function. The measuring tape, screw driver and bottle cap are results of this framework, highlighting the importance of considering users’ emotions in the design process.

A Bubble Hand Sanitiser Inspired by Covid-19 🧼🦠

COVID-19 has brought about many unwelcomed changes, a new normal to our everyday life that is filled with restrictions. Opal is a hand sanitiser inspired by this negative turn of events. Combining the joy of catching bubbles with the action of sanitising our hands, Opal brings an air of surprise and fun amidst Covid-19, seeing the disruptive preventive measures of everyday life not as obstacles, but as sparks for joyful possibilities.

John finds inspiration by interacting with and analysing the nuanced details in products on display shelves. He finds a sense of humour in observing the behaviours that people have adopted like the affordance of tissue packets to chope tables, but also recognises these behaviours as the most authentic insights into the human psychology which cannot be quantified.

Empty Spaces Widen Imagination 🔲

The Empty Nest collection is a series of graphics and products that emphasizes the empty spaces as a way to blur the lines between the 2D and 3D. This is best conveyed through my logotype where the highlights form my initials ‘JM’ and simultaneously draws an archway, leading the viewer’s eye into an imaginary world of their own making.

Just as empty spaces reveal what lies within our imagination, interacting with the bedside table and alarm clock reveals more of what lies within the object, adding another dimension to our interaction.

Empty Nest:

Drawing attention to the empty spaces in our life, the Empty Nest collection creates room for imagination to wonder, blurring the lines between the 2D and 3D and revealing new perspectives with every interaction.
