Want to own a pub?

Sounds ridiculous. But this might actually be going somewhere.

I’ve spent the last few weeks digging into who really controls the beer on British bars, talking privately with people inside the pub and beer industry, and asking a much bigger question:

What if we built a pubco big enough to take on the pubcos, but didn’t run it like a bunch of bastards?

A professionally run organisation that could buy and protect pubs, give communities a genuine say, and give independent breweries a fairer route onto the bar.

I’m not announcing a new pub company. Nobody’s asking you for money. And I definitely haven’t suddenly become qualified to restructure the British pub industry.

But people considerably more qualified than me have been working on versions of this idea for years.

The new video is LIVE NOW on YouTube.

Search The Hopper Reviews and look for:

WANT TO OWN A PUB?

Then tell me, would you actually want to be part of something like this?

Want to own a pub?

Not on your own. I’m not expecting you to suddenly become Chief Executive of Cellar Maintenance and Blocked Toilets.

But what if thousands of ordinary people supported an organisation capable of buying, restoring and protecting British pubs?

After some very interesting private conversations, I’ve ended up exploring one potentially radical idea.

It isn’t an announcement, and I’m not asking for money.

I want to know whether it could genuinely work.

New video Monday at 6pm on my YouTube channel @thehopperreviews 👌

CAMRA has revealed the 16 regional winners still competing to become the UK’s Pub of the Year 2026.

Wales is represented by @moldalehouse, while London’s contender, @thecockpitmicropub is hidden behind a working florist and reportedly fines customers for using their phone or swearing.

Historic inns, community-owned pubs and one with its own microbrewery have also made the final 16.

What actually makes the UK’s best pub, the beer, the building, the people or the atmosphere?

See the complete list through @campaignforrealale .

Thrilled to see Support an Independent Pub Day featured in the Morning Advertiser. 💪

Tomorrow is the BIG DAY. We launched this initiative we created with @londonpubexplorer 3 years ago to encourage people to support independent pubs after the harrowing month of Dry January and help make the tills ring. Since then, more pub enthusiasts have joined the movement, and this year we are organising this special day with @historicpubcrawls .💪

If you have not planned anything for tomorrow yet, have a look at the list of pint sales targets and events organised by the participating pubs (click on ‘Support an Independent Pub Day’ in our bio), grab your @city_stack special beer mat to enjoy £10 off your bill, and head to some of the best independent pubs London has to offer to show them some love and support.

If you are in Borough, come and say hi to @historicpubcrawls and @city_stack as we will be spending the day at the @bluemaid, a lovely historic pub with other pub enthusiasts such as @londonpubmap , @pintmap and many others. 🍻

Quotes from Tyler, landlord of @queenshead.london , and Geoff, landlord of @thepeltonarms .

If you haven’t heard of @City_Stack yet, our initiative supports independent pubs all year long with a unique voucher pack. Spend £25, get £100 worth of food and drink at some of the best independent pubs across London. You save money and you support independent pubs at the same time, it’s a win win! To find out more, visit citystack.co.

Let’s go to independent pubs!

Lovely to see so many pub & brewing friends, plus Dale Harvey from The Great British Pub Crawl, the fantastic Mark Dodds, and in a first, even for me, to be interviewed by Pete Brown outside the gents! 😅

Now, where's the paracetamol...🙃

In November 2014, following four damning reports & years of campaigning by #publicans & campaigners, MPs voted for a genuine #MarketRentOnly option for #pubco tenants. This was never delivered. The Code &
MRO were watered down & neutered & the pubcos allowed to practice code avoidance & persecution of tenants daring to use their legal right to go free of tie.🤬

We have written to the secretary of state for Business and Trade Jonathan Reynolds urging the Government to act and stop the ongoing abuse of the beer tie & unfair treatment of tenant publicans.

Stop the #PubcoRipoff! 🛑💰❌

Ten years on we finally need the #FairDealForYourLocal that was promised! ⚖️

Our letter & press release is here ⬇️

Expanded glass bubbles work well in place of concrete - when done properly. We made the mixture too dry. Thanks to @giorgeoutdoors who popped round to help us we set out to redo it. Took off the loose layer of bubbles, remixed with lime and plenty of water. Then filled in the holes and put on an overall top coat. Now good and solid waiting for the leveller.

A real honour to be part of this brilliant exhibition with so many great artists. I had a studio next door to Mark Wallinger in a squat in an old school in the Elephant in 1995. His work has meant a lot to me over the years. All of the artists involved have collectively created a powerful exhibition that's sums up these times.
