NEW DETROIT IS DIFFFERENT!!!
Detroit is Different episode 610 with Jasmine Brooks

Teaching in Ghana Led Me Back to Detroit Students

“I wanted to come back to the city that raised me.” Jasmine Brooks’ commitment to Detroit students is rooted in a life shaped by family, faith, education, dance, and service. Raised near Aretha Franklin’s childhood home, nurtured at Hartford Memorial Baptist Church, educated at Renaissance High School, the University of Michigan, and Wayne State, Jasmine traces how Detroit institutions and Black community traditions prepared her to pour into another generation. As a child, Jasmine was introduced to dance and taught by legends like Penny Godboldo (RIP) and Gina Ellis. That foundation in creativity—and in learning how to find her place and space on stage, in rhythm—helped prepare her to navigate the many paths toward success. Today, her connection with the students of Graduate313 brings that journey full circle. “It’s an opportunity to learn even more about myself and what my future self is looking to get into,” she says of what young people should experience through Graduate313. Her vision reaches beyond college admission toward “their upward mobility for life.” Listen for a Detroit story about what happens when the people who were poured into decide to become somebody else’s bridge.

If you’ve been following me for a while, you’ve definitely heard me talk about Jasmine Brooks, founder of @jmbadvising before.

When I stepped into a high school leadership role in Detroit, Jasmine was already a trusted member of the school community. At a time when she had opportunities to go elsewhere, she chose to stay, and I’m so glad she did.

As a new leader, you need people who know the history, understand the culture, and have relationships that can’t be built overnight. Jasmine was that person for me.

Over the years, I had the privilege of supporting her growth into instructional leadership, while she played a major role in helping me grow as a leader, too.

That’s the beauty of leadership. We develop people, and if we’re fortunate, they develop us right back.

What began as a work relationship became a lifelong friendship, and I’ll always be grateful for that. And of course, we will do “our pose” every single time ❗️

🗣️ I’m celebrating the Power of Us at the TFA 35th Anniversary Summit with TFA Detroit! 🎉

Join me on October 2nd and 3rd in Las Vegas for an unforgettable summit honoring
people, purpose and progress. 🙌🏾

I always tell people that teaching was the hardest job I’ve ever had, but it’s the one I’ve loved the most. Being a teacher, especially in Detroit, showed me just how powerful community, love, and literacy can be when it comes to changing the world. Every single person in the world has had a teacher, and yet we’re living in an age of anti-intellectualism. Why is that!? I know why! But I also know that we have the power to change that long as we come together to make it so! ✨

For 35 years, Teach for America has disrupted the status quo, expanding opportunity by developing leaders driven by purpose and a commitment to One Day. This moment is YOURS. A Summit designed to inspire, mobilize, and help define the future. 💫

📍 Location: Caesars Forum | Las Vegas, NV
📅 When: October 2-3, 2026
🎟 Reserve your spot: Register for the summit today! Comment TEACH and I’ll send you the link! 👨🏾‍🏫 @tfadetroit

✨ Our 4th Annual Women’s History Month Celebration was a success✨

What an incredible evening centered on purpose, connection, and empowerment. From meaningful conversations to intentional goal-setting, this year’s theme, “Go for It: Moving with Purpose,” truly came to life.

We’re so grateful to everyone who joined us, shared space, and poured into one another. 💐 Special thanks to our inspiring keynote speaker, Dr. Mischa Bashir, whose words challenged and encouraged us to lead boldly and intentionally.

Moments like these remind us of the power of community—when women come together, we don’t just reflect… we move forward with purpose.
