Another day on the JMT means another opportunity to see @jmtconservancy work in action.

By rerouting the John Muir Trail, dismantling the old trail, adding over 40 BDA’s, with the help of their restoration consultant @symbiotic_restoration and removing rocks and debris the restricted water flow. JMT Wild was able to restore Sallie Keyes meadow so that now it’s holds water year-round. Providing important habitat for countless species.

Meadows are an important piece of the Sierra ecosystem, and now Sallie Keyes Meadow is exactly that thanks to @jmtconservancy

Today I got the opportunity to see some amazing work in action.

The JMT Wilderness Conservancy is working to restore multiple meadows around Reds Meadow and Devils Postpile National Monument to help improve the local ecosystems and recreation.

Silver Pass (10,700') is the highest point of my section hike of the John Muir Trail from Red's Meadow to VVR! 🏔🏔🎒🏞🇺🇸

Clouds started to gather as light snow began to fall. Due to freezing temperatures, mosquitoes were not a problem. Though the views were beautiful, I was eager to head down to Silver Pass Lake to find a suitable campsite.

For this section, through the Sierra Nevada within Sierra National Forest and within Fresno County, California, the John Muir Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail are one and the same.

Next stop, Silver Pass Lake!

If you want to know how Sam Peckinpah contributed to the eventual purchase of Muir Trail Ranch—one of the finest legacy spots in the Sierra—here it is.

Third-generation owner Hillary Hurley tells the tale (during a bumpy ride into camp) of her grandfather, Karl Smith, first seeing the place on a backpacking trip with Peckinpah, a Fresno native and eventual director, and how their family ultimately acquired the place.

Quite a saga…

Hiking the John Muir Trail up to Chief Lake, Warrior Lake, and and Nüümü Hu Hupi! 💦🎒🏞🇺🇸

To get here, I had to hike back up and out of the Tully Hole. For this section, the John Muir Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail are one and the same. Due to freezing overnight temperatures, mosquitoes were not a problem.

I got to see a couple of marmots here within Sierra National Forest and within Fresno County, California.

The views continue to be beautiful and worth every step southbound through the Sierra Nevada!

Next stop, Silver Pass!

Day 10 JMT. Piute Creek Junction to Evolution lake. 11.1 miles, 3219 ft ascent, 420 ft descent. First of many afternoon thunderstorms. This one involves a snickers break with my trail friend Cali, an emergency tent pitch in Colby Meadow to wait it out and the spectacular evolution lake to finish off the day.

Day 6 JMT. Duck Pass Junction to Lake Nüümü Hu Hupi. 9.4 miles, 2510 ft elevation gain, 2247 elevation loss. This sunset was spectacular.

Via Lake Virginia.

Just out here looking like an ad for @durstongear.

Gorgeous Tully Hole.

Hiking the John Muir Trail to Lake Virginia! 💦🎒🏞🇺🇸

I camped here overnight and it was freezing! Fortunately, my sleeping bag was able to handle the cold temperatures.

Lake Virginia is deep within the John Muir Wilderness of the Sierra National Forest. Through this part of the Sierra Nevada, the John Muir Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail overlap.

The views continue to be beautiful and worth every step southbound!

Making my way up the John Muir Trail, crossing Duck Creek, just below Duck Lake. 🦆💦🎒🏞🇺🇸

Finally leaving the Mammoth Lakes area on the southbound John Muir Trail. Duck Lake and this area of the Sierra National Forest are deep into the John Muir Wilderness.

There are dozens of northbound Pacific Crest Trail hikers for every southbounder.

The views are beautiful and worth every step!

Day 14 🏔️ John Muir Trail (Nüümü Poyo trail) 🏔️ August 2025 🏔️ SOBO 🥾

—————- 🥾🌄🏔️🏕️🌲—————-

11.1 mi // Elevation 1050 ft ⬆️ 2700 ⬇️
14.5 km // Elevation 320 m ⬆️ 820 m ⬇️
🌙 🏕️ elevation: 9250 ft // 2800 m

Started in Evolution Basin approaching Sapphire Lake, past Wanda Lake, up to Muir Pass and the Muir Shelter, and down into Le Conte Canyon.

Muir Pass and the Muir Hut sit at the highest point I’ve reached on trail up to this point (and ever): 11,955 ft in elevation.

Unfortunately, in the Mordor-like ankle rolling rock field heading down from Muir Hut, I resprained my ankle that has been doing so well since I rested 5 days ago for 2 zero rest days. Thankfully I only felt discomfort when I stepped completely flat and square (otherwise, it was an ouch fest), so I just had to be mindful of my steps and slow down the last few miles of the day and shorten my planned 14 mile day.

Otherwise, it was a beautiful day with perfect weather — and I was thrilled to reach the icon Muir Shelter. It really was a “oh hey I am TRULY nailing this JMT thru-hike moment” 🥹👏🏻🫶.

And the marmots. Sooo much marmot footage from this day. They were living their best life up on that pass!
