On behalf of the Madison Art Collection we are beyond excited to announce that on October 30th, at 10 am, we will host goldsmith @joyharvey who will be talking about her experience as the Inaugural Fellow for the Artisan Residency at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in partnership with Vacheron Constantin. At the Madison Art Collection, she will present her latest work: a deliberately distressed bronze, gold and diamond diadem that plays with and pushes against the jewellery world’s search for timelessness and perfection. Over coffee and snacks, we will chat about the role of museums and museum collections in inspiring new artworks and preserving craftmanship. In 2024, Harvey, whose brand @laluce_gioielleria is a B-Corp, was a finalist for the LVMH prize ‘Maestri d’eccellenza’ and won the Boghossian Foundation’s jewellery prize. She is a founding member of Truly Precious, an NGO dedicated to sharing sustainability knowledge in the jewellery business.

These CT variations deserve to be heard in larger halls so I orchestrated it as a concerto (for cello or double bass) from the piano part. Thank you Dr. Omelchenko and the JMU Symphony for the opportunity.

We were absolutely delighted to welcome MAC alumna and new assistant professor of anthropology, Dr Taylor Callaway, to our workroom yesterday! The students in Dr Callaway’s North American Civilisation class looked closely at a selection of lithic tools in our collection, drawing each one closely to learn how stone tools were made.

On Tuesday, in our new Flex Space, the Madison Art Collection hosted a special ekphrastic session for Dr Jason Baltazar’s Fiction Writing class! Students were encouraged to look carefully at a selection of objects - carefully chosen by intern @matt_epstein079 for their eclecticism and introduced by associate director Dr Maria Harvey - before starting to write their descriptions. They also got a sneak peek of our new exhibition, Chuán: Dialogues with Chinese Cultural Heritage, curated by director Ginny Soenksen and assistant professor of graphic design @feixuefeixue. Chuán opens next week!
