Cold reads don’t test how prepared you are… they test how present you can be. ☝🏼🎭

A cold read is when you’re given a script moments before performing - no memorization, no rehearsal, just your ability to bring it to life on the spot. 📌

And that’s where most actors slip, because when you don’t have time to prepare, your instinct is to cling to the page instead of the moment. ❌

Here’s how to actually stand out in a cold read:

• 👀 Don’t read the words… read the moment: Your eyes should only be on the page long enough to grab the thought. Then get your focus back up and play the intention.
• 🎯 Prioritize intention over perfection: You’re not being judged on memorization. You’re being judged on clarity. What do you want from the other person?
• ⚡ Make a choice fast and commit: Indecision kills cold reads. Even a “wrong” choice that’s fully committed is more interesting than playing it safe.
• 🧠 Stay one step ahead of the line: Quickly scan ahead so you’re not discovering words as you say them. That’s what keeps you from sounding robotic.
• 🎭 Get out of your head and into the scene: The second you start worrying about the script, you lose connection. Focus on the world and reality that the character is in.

Takeaway: Casting doesn’t expect perfection in a cold read, but they do expect presence. If it feels like you’re reading, you’re already behind. 🎬

Finally wrapping post production last month, I’m happy to share the stills of CONSCIOUSNESS, a sci-fi/horror/romance short film. I wrote and directed this as my UCLA “senior thesis film” in spring of 2024 as a part of my final for The Sunken Place: Racism, Survival, and Black Horror Aesthetic class. This film took my skills as a writer/director to the another level I wanted to while at UCLA film school.

Logline: After receiving a sentient VR headset that becomes dangerously possessive, a young man must fight for his life and newfound love when the artificial intelligence violently attempts to eliminate its romantic rival.
