Let’s Discuss Speed Development. Far Too Often “Speed Training” Gets All the Lip Service but is No More Than a Speed Ladder Session or Gassers… None of These Will Develop Your Athlete’s Speed from a Technical or Physical Standpoint. Ken Clark’s Research has Shown That the Only Way to Get Fast is to Run Fast. In Other Words, You Have to Hit Maximal Velocity Speed. For Non-Track Athletes this is Distances Beyond 20 -30 Yards Distance. A 10 Yard Fly or 40 Yard Dash is the Typical Assessment. Maximal Velocity Work is the Highest Ground Contact Forces at the Highest Speed an Athlete Can Produce and it is Extremely Taxing on the Central Nervous System, thus Making it Fragile. That Fragility Makes Monitoring a HUGE Priority.
Another Component to Speed: Less Fragile, and Done More Frequently is Accelerating. Think of Hill Sprints, Sled Work, 5-20 Yard Bursts… Acceleration Can be Trained by Getting Stronger and Doing Plyometric Work Without a Ton of Emphasis.
Lastly, as Far as General Athletics is Concerned, Change of Direction and Agility Work is an Entirely Other Component that Must be Address for Field and Court Sports.
Be Sure Your Son or Daughter Doesn’t Just Stick to Speed Ladders and Gassers for Their Speed Development. Be Sure They’re Hitting All Three Areas of Concern and Not Turning Speed Training into Conditioning.
