The Remarkable Story of @joahughe and he Mum @LaurieKhoe
Jo left Hong Kong for Britain in 1979 and built a successful career in engineering. Today, she lives in Surrey, where she cares for her remarkably active 89-year-old mother while leading a busy life of her own — dancing, running music workshops and concerts @folk.inspiration , and volunteering with vulnerable groups.

Behind their peaceful life in Surrey, however, lies an extraordinary family history shaped by wartime imprisonment, landmark architecture and repeated reinvention.

“My father was tortured after being suspected of being an American spy — but he taught us never to hate.”

O, my heart. And into the kitchen we go! See @benleijendeckers and I defect to the musicians side when the tune changes to (one of my all time favorites) the Kings’ Barrows (A. Letcher) 😅🎶🖤 I don’t think this needs much more explanation to understand why.. well. Wow. My heart. I’ll keep this with me forever, if you don’t mind. //English Acoustic Collective 2026//

English Acoustic Collective. Y’all. What a week. I’m back home in Texas after a bit of an odyssey for the return trip and finally sitting with these gems. There’s really no way to explain the magic that happens during EAC. You shop and cook together, camp together, constantly playing and dancing together. This is what it’s about. To be human. To be alive. What a privilege it was to share space and time with these incredible friends. You can be sure I have even more to share, but for the moment appreciate the idyllic peace of Ruskin Mill College, my full-hearted but questionably executed attempts at pizza making, a beautiful memento I was given by Joe- his sketching of all of us as signified by our instruments (it’s raining on my face!), and my comically large tent. Not pictured, but to be appreciated in spirit, my two flat tires on my rental car that I acquired while just 10 minutes from my destination at the start of the first day and Sam kicking his shoe straight across the courtyard in his clogging efforts. Big sighs. Big love.

On 9th September, I played my Benefit Concert for Ukraine in Farnham to a full house at @farnhammaltings Tindle Studio. Thank you to everyone who came and made this evening so special. 💙💛

The concert was part of a beautiful collaboration organised by Folk Inspiration @folk.inspiration @joahughe in partnership with Invisible Visible, alongside the moving photography of Natalia Sharomova @natalia.sharomova and the Ukrainian Art Group. It was an honour to witness how music and art came together to share Ukraine’s story and spirit.

Thank you, Farnham, for your kindness, generosity, open hearts and for selling out all of my CDs during the interval!

See you again soon 🤍
