💖What I read in a week as a corporate 9–5 girlie 💖

Oh my goodness, what a month of reading I have been having! The yearning has just been *chef’s kiss* (but this is why historical romance is my favorite genre).

I just had to share with you two incredible reads from this month and both are from authors that I adore.

Stay Here Forever by Andie James: A stunning second-chance novella that had the most beautiful autumn vibes. I wanted to live within this novel and was sad when it ended. Andie is so skilled at bringing you close to her characters and makes you feel like you are living within their shoes.

If you are new to Andie James’ work, you will want to go and read her back list immediately! Her books are so delightful and I love how she balances fresh storytelling with the traditional elegant prose and tropes of the genre. I am also an avid listener of her podcast @first_encounter_hr_pod

The Gilded Rose by Joanna Shupe: As someone who absolutely adores Beauty and the Beast retellings, I was hooked from the start! I was quite literally hanging on the edge of my seat and couldn’t put this book down. I also loved learning fascinating details about marriage laws at the time. As always with Joanna’s work, the spice was a perfect compliment to the intimacy of the characters.

🥀 The Gilded Rose by @joannashupe is a deeply emotional Beauty and the Beast retelling where she marries Gaston. It’s set into the early 1900’s New York with heavy themes of marital abuse, both emotional and physical with on page 🍇 in more than 1 chapter. Women in the early 1900’s often faced emotional abuse, including control, humiliation, isolation and being treated as though they had little say in their own lives and bodies. This story follows Caroline, a young and vivacious book expert who believes she has found her fairytale prince to only learn that marriage doesn’t always equal HEA💔.

While dark this book is also very romantic. Caroline and Zane both have traumatic pasts yet the yearning for each other..... The writing of the scenes with them together healed my heart for them piece by piece. It’s a spicy book where the sex is very sensual as Zane shows Caroline how intimacy is shared and women’s pleasure should be received😏. He is a green flag CONSENT king 👑!

A hard earned and emotional HEA ❤️‍🩹

ZANE BISHOP THE MAN THAT YOU ARE. I read this book with a feverish devotion and it was one of those books that really had me captivated from the start.

I am an absolute sucker for a fairy tale retelling so I was sold on reading this when I read that it was Beauty and the Beast but retold in Gilded Age New York with the twist being that Belle has married Gaston first.

Soon after her marriage, Caroline realizes that her husband Orson Grey is not the man who courted her but a cruel and controlling man. Trapped by the laws of the day, Caroline has little recourse to change the reality of her gilded prison. Until she is given the chance to catalogue a private library and meets the wealthy recluse who owns it, Zane Bishop, a man who was gruesomely disfigured years ago. Zane is everything her husband is not.

Before you read this, it is crucial that you know that this has significant triggers, including marital assault. Readers should take care and go in knowing that Caroline really suffers at the hands of her husband.

The romance in this truly undid me. I read a lot of books each year. I like a lot of them. Few have me in an absolute chokehold the way this one did. The way Zane yearns for Caroline to the point of physical pain absolutely undid me. I love all the lovely nods to the original fairy tale. I love the way they both come to this relationship with serious psychological and physical trauma. They heal each other! The way he will burn down the world and destroy anything that dares to threaten or hurt her, but is the gentlest beast in the world to her really did it for me.

Beyond the love story, this is also educational. We learn: 1) The laws around women’s lack of rights within marriage in Gilded Age New York were appalling and 2) Everyone is worthy of love regardless of physical appearance.

The Gilded Rose by @joannashupe was my first historical romance read in a looooooong while. Thank you @avonbooks for the opportunity to read and review.

Set in the time of stock market kings, garden luncheons, and few women’s rights, Caroline takes a stand to rise above what society has offered her. Caroline is a 19 year old young woman who found herself in an abusive marriage after just a few weeks of courtship. She questions why no one in her high society taught her about marital relations and the pain of a loss of independence in marriage.

Join Caroline as she stands up to her controlling husband in small sly ways and builds her confidence to explore the affections of the mysterious Mr. Bishop.
