Summer at ‘The Glove’: Wet noses, dripping chins, water landscape features, lousy football results … But still the best place to be even this English summer.

Steal this plant combination 🌿👇🏼

Earlier this week we shared our previously completed project ‘The North Wiltshire Garden’, so we thought we’d share a deeper dive into some of the planting.

Here Knautia macedonic and Nepeta work harmoniously together and create a beautifully wild place to sit in the garden on that light blue bench.

Knautia macedonica, often called Macedonian scabious, boasts vibrant, wine-red blooms that add a splash of deep color to any garden from early summer to Autumn. This perennial thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, reaching up to 2 feet in height. It’s a pollinator magnet, so expect visits from bees and butterflies!

Nepeta, commonly known as catmint, is beloved for its aromatic, gray-green foliage and soft lavender flowers. It’s incredibly easy to grow, preferring full sun and dry, well-drained soils. Nepeta blooms from late spring through late summer, and cutting it back midseason can encourage a second bloom and maintain its bushy form.

💧🌿 Care Tips: Both plants are drought-tolerant once established, making them perfect for low-water gardens. Deadhead Knautia to prolong blooming and trim back Nepeta after its first flush of flowers to keep it neat and prolific.

Plant these beauties together for a garden that’s both a feast for the eyes and a haven for wildlife. 🐝

Located within the vale of the River Avon, this is one of our favourite smaller scale projects that we’ve completed.

Following an extension at the rear of the house, the previous garden no longer worked or made sense. What was needed was a complete re-think on structure and shape – with plenty of space for outside entertaining and pathways that created a journey amongst the planting.

As the client was a keen gardener, we were able make this a ‘gardener’s garden’ through a comprehensive planting scheme. (Though our recent post last week reminded her to get out and tackle the weeding 😉 more on our stories)

Herbaceous perennials were combined with grasses that are punctuated with strong, feature plants including multi-stemmed crab apple and clipped Columnar hornbeam. We also installed LED lighting to create atmosphere and drama at night.

Designed by Andrew Johnstone & @serenafremantle - you can find out more about this ‘North Wiltshire Garden’ project on the Johnstone Landscapes website, and there’s more on our stories.

It's all over the news and social media today. But isn't this missing the point yet again????

Isn't it yet again the government and the NHS shifting their responsibilities somewhere else, instead of sorting out the primary and secondary care system and taking women's health seriously?

It's all very nice to hear that employers have a responsibility of care for their employees, whatever their health situation.
And I know how much reasonable adjustments can make a huge difference when facing a heath challenge of any type.

BUT THIS IS MISSING THE POINT

We need early intervention and prevention rather than shiny sticky plasters!

👉🏻Train GPs and primary and secondary care professionals so that they provide the RIGHT advice and treatments EARLY
👉🏻Train them so they diagnose peri and post menopause health issues quickly
👉🏻 Make access to today's body identical HRT easy and free instead of waiting until those who need it derail to support them
👉🏻 Signpost women early in life to the benefits of stress management, nutrition, physical activity, so that menopause symptoms are lessened or avoided

But don't make it the sole responsibility of employers.

'Reasonable Adjustments' are nothing but fancy sticky plasters if what you need is a holistic approach to menopause with individualised care and choices on and availability of HRT, complementary medicine and therapies, and lifestyle options.

For so many women, and the vast majority in my view and experience, with HRT and lifestyle adjustments, we can minimise the use and need of these shiny sticky plasters and continue working with minimal impact and short term adjustments.

Your thoughts?

Ventilation is too often side-lined as the mechanical engineer’s responsibility, when it is in fact a crucial aspect of all buildings that must also be considered by the architect / designer. Natural ventilation and mechanical ventilation can both be viable solutions when incorporated early in the design.

While the need for proper indoor ventilation is not new, the focus on good indoor ventilation has increased as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic resulting in upcoming changes to building code standards and enhanced indoor air quality guidelines.

Join myself and @joannawatchman in our upcoming ventilation @dasceus seminar covering the health impacts of indoor air quality, as well as the basics of good ventilation integration to ensure both a healthy building and healthy occupants.

When: Live 27 April 1-2pm EST or watch on demand for AIA and IDCEC credits

If we spend an average 90% of our time indoors, access to good quality daylight at work and at home is crucial to health & wellbeing.

Exposure to daylight helps regulate sleep / wake times, improves focus, and reduces eye strain among other benefits.

Learn the basics of daylight design.

I’m presenting the seminar live alongside guest speaker @joannawatchman . Recording viewable on demand for 1 HSW Continuing education AIA or IDCEC credit.
