Learning rain harvesting from the masters. 💧 @watershed_mg @drylandwaterharvester

“It’s alive!” After closing up my week of learning rain harvesting in the desert I keep coming back to the purpose of catching & planting rain. It shouldn’t only be about human use. Building basins, reshaping land to have slopes & berms helps restore the land back to the way it was before we got here to bulldoze, modify & flatten.

Creating places for rain to sit and soak into the Earth instead of rolling off onto concrete gives us all, animals and plants, you and I, a place to drink from. A place for plants to cool & regenerate the Earth.

The ultimate goal of rain harvesting is to restore areas back to how they were when everything was able to multiply itself. When everything was alive.

Water cycles through us. The water inside of you, makes up 60% of you, and was once a hurricane, a cloud, a river, an ocean. We are not separate from what is around us. We cannot separate ourselves from Water. Separation is Illusion. We are Water.

When we honor Water, we honor ourselves and every other living being around us.

May the reason “we are running out of water” never be the excuse for giving away 444 acres of wildlife habitat ever again (Yes, I am coming at you Brownsville) when people in the desert live off of 11 inches of caught rainwater a year compared to our mismanaged & neglected 23 inches.

Excited to transfer this knowledge into practice. Excited to help this community become ALIVE again. Remember to VOTE!! Putting people in places of power who care about our land, our culture, our biological heritage is the only way we all survive.

🌱 We have so much to share from our Tree Planting day last month!

Thanks to the Canopy for Kids grant, our campus is now home to 32 new shade trees — creating cooler outdoor spaces and giving our students a hands-on role in designing a greener future. Through our partnership with Arizona State University, students helped plan where trees should go and learned how sustainable design can combat urban heat!

Read the full story on our blog and see how we’re planting the seeds for a cooler, greener campus. 🌳
