How do you actually win the UTD 100 Miler?

Swipe to find out! I pulled every finisher from 2018 to 2025, split by split, checkpoint by checkpoint, and analysed the pacing patterns. The results may surprise you. Three of the six winners led at CP1 (@brand.naomi , @kennedysekhuthe ) with some back and forth in the middle. Only @jock.green in 2018 led at every checkpoint. Two took the lead mid-race. One, Ross Lutsch in 2023, was sitting 21st early and 3rd midway before coming back to win. His first CP lead was at the pre-finish! 52.7% of the runners who ever held a top-5 spot within the race finished outside the top 5 (either DNF or loss of position). The front of this race is not a seat it’s a war of attrition until the end. The average top-5 finisher slowed 15.8% from first half to second but not every year hurts the same. 2025 was the hardest second half on record with a 22.4% slow down. @nicolette7g was the exception this year, only slowing down 16.6% and storming to win the ladies race and finish 3rd overall. 2023 was the steadiest with an 11.2% slow down. Note the course has changed pretty much every year so it is hard to compare year on year profiles but larger patterns can still be analysed. In three of the last six editions, the winner slowed less than the pack around them and in the other 3 they slowed down about the same as the top 5 average. @mattthomsonza slowed down the most on record whilst still finishing on the podium. He lost 29.6% of his first half speed to second half in 2025 and crossed the line in 4th (3rd male). Ross Lutsch is the only person within the top 5 on record who actually got faster in the second half and won 2023 from outside the top 20 at CP1. The key lessons aren’t glamorous: 1. Run within yourself early. 2. Protect the second half. 3. Stay in the game when it hurts. The runners who win @ultratraildrakensberg miler don’t always start the fastest. They bleed time the slowest. Save this one for your next 100 mile race! Built from UTD Miler data, 2018 to 2025. - - - - - - #runcoach #ultratrailrunning #trailrunning #trailrunningcommunity #100miler

🥇CONTENDERS🥇 Excitement is building as we head into the final stretch to race day. With all the hard training in the bag, we look to the sharp end of the racing and the contenders that will line up to race it out for the podium positions when they set off from Lady Grey on Saturday the 16th of November. 2023 winners in both the mens and womens 100km races, Simon Tshabalala and Simone Malan, will be back to defend their titles and we wonder where the charge for first place will come from. Will the magic 12h00 mark be broken in the mens race? We can’t wait to see all the drama unfold! What are your predictions? @kwaysa @ledlensersa @suuntosa @racefoodsa #ultratrail #trailrunning #trailrunner #skyrun #kwayskyrun #hellofarun

"Have you done this race before?" I asked him as we slowly slogged up the wooden steps. "This is my 10th year - in a row," he added. "And it never gets easier!" "I ran this on Thursday, and now again today. I've always wanted to do a double!" Another runner told me. The fact that so many runners return year after year to take on this grueling yet breathtaking trail says something. Normally a 5-day hike, only the most tenacious and committed can secure a spot for this sold-out-in-minutes 40km trail race. The Otter Trail in Titsikamma Park on the Garden Route of South Africa is truly incredible. Scenes from a wonderful weekend!! The Grail of Trail, the stunning and magnificent Otter Trail, conquered and enjoyed. #otterafricantrailrun #ottertrail #trailrunning #trailrunner #ultratrail #ultrarunner #triathlete #triathlontraining #tsitsikamma #gardenroute #southafrica #trainhard #traineveryday #fitspo #fitover40 #fitmom #fitmotivation #workhardplayhard #bloukransbridge @otterafricantrailrun @oakley @salomon_sa @usnsa @npl_international @adidasterrex #yesadidas

Another incredible Grail of Trail, @otterafricantrailrun gave us an incredible weekend. Through 36° heat and humidity, and relentless sun, those 7000+ put us all to the test. We lept theatrically into the Mighty Bloukraans to cool our sweating skin, and scrambled into any creek or stream we could find. Blocks of ice and bananas fueled us as we trudged 41km east up the coast of the stunning Tsitsikama Park, a seal spotting, and beautiful protea in bloom. The heat tested even the most elite athletes, and we were all thrilled, albeit limping, to have conquered this beautiful, rugged coastline. #trainhard #trailrunning #trailrunner #triathlete #triathlontraining #ultratrail #ottertrail #protea #coast #nature #runnersofinstagram #runninglife #oakley #salomonrunning @npl_international @usnsa @salomon_sa

Meet the 2024 Rhino Peak Challenge Ambassadors | Jock Green Jock’s sporting pedigree needs no introduction, he’s represented SA Road Cycling for 10 years, and the SA National Team at World Championships, Commonwealth and the All African Games. More recently he’s turned to trail running with great success, representing South Africa at the World Championships. He’s also a previous winner of Ultra Trail Drakensburg and Karkloof 100 Milers, and has endured a few painful podium places at Ultra Trail Cape Town and SkyRun. ‘When fellow RPC Ambassador Tammy Baker reached out to me through the Ford Wildlife Foundation, I simply couldn’t say no! Having followed the event for some years now, loads of my friends and fellow runners have participated in and raised funds for this worthy cause and now I get a chance to experience and add to it - really looking forward to it.’ Visit the Ambassador page on our website to support Jock’s fundraising efforts!
