It is Jodie Manasevit who was the initial motivator for our group show, 'Like Cotyledon's Buckled with Loam.' When asked, Jodie said she would like to have her work shown in a context along with the painting of Thomas Nozkowski, the rest flowed from there... Louis Block speaks about his painting and writing and how they interrelate, or don't. Block had nine pieces in our group show 'Like Cotyledon's Buckled with Loam,' a tribute to the work of painter Thomas Nozkowski. The title for this show was lifted from the text of Block's exceptionally sensitive review in The Brooklyn Rail of Thomas Nozkowski's solo show at Pace in 2024. Block also reviewed for The Rail participating artist Jodie Manasevit's solo show at Ghostmachine in November, 2025. Walking into the group exhibition, Like Cotyledons Buckled with Loam at Art Cake, curated by David Dixon, you are first greeted with a piece by Thomas Nozkowski. This piece is one of three included in the exhibition, each serving as a foundational anchor point in the show. Within the paintings, Nozkowski abstracts forms or fractions of events, allowing viewers to experience the essence and bring their own associations to the works. These impressions and modes of abstracting flow into the other works of Jodie Manasevit, Louis Block, Joseph Brock, and David Dixon himself. Each of the artists exhibiting in this show draws inspiration from Nozkowski’s work, an artist they all admire. LIKE COTYLEDONS BUCKLED WITH LOAM The painting of Thomas Nozkowski with Louis Block, Joseph Brock, and Jodie Manasevit, cinematic contribution by Casimir Nozkowski, built and curated by David Dixon ART CAKE @artcake_nyc 214 40th St. Brooklyn 11232 open thru Sat. January 31 hrs. Thurs-Sun, 12-6pm Included in this exhibition of mostly painting, we also centrally project Casimir Nozkowki’s video “a hike with Thomas Nozkowski.” from 2007. This video captures a conversation the filmmaker had with his painter father about seeing. I first saw this video in a studio visit with painter participant Joseph Brock who showed it to me when discussing Nozkowski’s influence. The video, oddly, made me laugh; there is a visual delight to see like this, to be taught to see like Nozkowski, to see like a Nozkowski painting. It led me to believe that everyone should paint like this, or that this is what we all do when we paint, or even just think; essentially, we abstract things from reality. Perhaps the mark of a great artist is that their method seems, in its moment, universally applicable and self-evident. In any event, in this video, to witness Nozkowski spin a visual tale from some debris and lichen found on a rock is to know the joy of imaginative pluralism’s endless making. We should say not Art for Art’s Sake, but Life for Art’s Sake. This is the creed I now retroactively recite when presented with a Nozkowski painting.  And here we have the paintings, not only of Nozkowski, but of several generations of descendants, each of whom has their own very specific language, but all of whom have gathered some seed from Nozkowski. This installation of artwork attempts to celebrate these lived connections through art and its community of makers in time. With this show, from a certain point of view, the whole of Art Cake (consistent with its mission) becomes a kind of cell in the act of mitosis: appropriating, extending, growing, harvesting, cathecting. . . . LIKE COTYLEDONS BUCKLED WITH LOAM open Thursday-Sunday, 12-6pm ART CAKE 214 40th St Brooklyn 11232 The painting of Thomas Nozkowski with Louis Block, Joseph Brock and Jodie Manasevit, cinematic contribution by Casimir Nozkowski, built and curated by David Dixon Painter/writer, Louis Block, who has five paintings and three works on paper in our Art Cake exhibition, wrote about Jodie Manasevit’s solo show, ‘Cathected’, at Ghostmachine just this last November. Both ‘Cathected’ and our current ‘Like Cotyledons…” include the above painting by Manasevit, ‘Snowblind’, 2024, oil on canvas, 11”x8”, which Block writes about elegantly for The Brooklyn Rail: “Many of Jodie Manasevit’s recent paintings are made up of units too self-contained to be called blotches or daubs of paint; yet they are often too imprecise to be called dots. Maybe they can live indeterminately as “spots,” areas that simply focus attention, places where things occur. They invade the fields of her canvases in an approximate order, loosely fitting into columns, strings, or braids. The longer these marks are held in focus, the more their patterns dissolve into and cancel each other out, until there is the sense that their placement comes out of a push and pull between conscious patternmaking and something more intuitive. In ‘Snowblind’ (2024), the canvas is bisected: on its right side multicolor spots float on a white ground, while on its left, they are painted in a stark white against silver. For all their random activity suggesting snow flurries, Manasevit’s spots are not indifferent to the rectangle: they line up along the canvas’s edges as if snapping magnetically to a grid. . . . “ Exhibition Press Release and Block’s complete text linked in Bio. @jodiemanasevit #jodiemanasevitcathected @louisblock @artcake_nyc #cotyledon #loam #painting

Opening tonight! Friday, 5-9pm @artcake_nyc LIKE COTYLEDONS BUCKLED WITH LOAM The painting of Thomas Nozkowski with Louis Block, Joseph Brock and Jodie Manasevit, cinematic contribution by Casimir Nozkowski, built and curated by David Dixon “I love being part of a community in time, you know? Before I decided to become an artist, I really thought about becoming a historian. I thought that would be a really interesting thing to do. One of the reasons I love painting, this singular thing, is the communal part of it, all sorts of people in different times and places, all trying to catch and hold some part of the visual continuum, all of them doing the same thing, no matter the context. . . .” -Thomas Nozkowski in conversation with John Yau for The Brooklyn Rail, 2010 ART CAKE 214 40th St., Brooklyn NY 11232 #thomasnozkowski @joseph_brock @jodiemanasevit @louisblock @casimirn #artcake #cotyledon #harvesting #cathexis
