Recently I had the pleasure and privilege to put together a collection of murals for the Cultural Capital festival in Clarksdale Mississippi. Here is a snapshot of what we came up with. The murals were commissioned by Griot Arts a non profit
organization based in Clarksdale.
The murals offer a powerful glimpse into the future of what The Griot Center will become for Clarksdale and the Mississippi Delta.
Special Shout out to my guy Thaxton and my team that helped make this possible. @joecoolart @damarcoarts

South Main is basically an open-air gallery. 🎨

Sometimes it just shows up on South Main, painted into brick and alley walls, catching light as you walk by. A pause between plans. A backdrop for an ordinary afternoon that suddenly feels a little more considered.

This is one of the things we love about Downtown Memphis. The art lives out here with you, woven into daily routes, noticed when you slow down enough to look.

What mural always makes you stop? 👇

Most of the prominent blue dog paintings that once dominated the intersection of Union Avenue and Cleveland Street were replaced after a decade on the side of the building. One blue dog remains, though (pictured), created by artist George Rodrigue.

The sun-damaged blue dogs were replaced by eight fresh, Memphis-inspired paintings from eight artists, including Debbie McCown, Kait Harris, Barrie Foster, Joseph Boyd, Matt Bowers, Elizabeth Acton and Stacy Early — who managed and curated the process.

Acton, a senior art student at the University of Memphis, created the dual tigers as an homage to her school and her life as a Memphis Tiger. “I’m a lifelong Memphian and the tiger has always been in my life as an icon of the city. This is a commemoration of this chapter of my life,” Acton said.
