A rare moment from 2000 in Brazil with my good friend @joedhurst 🤙

Back then I was a Navy diver stationed in Hawaii, burning all my leave just to compete. With only two weeks off a year, competition was tough… so I started the All Navy Jiu Jitsu team so I could train and travel more for competition.

On the way to Grandmaster Helio Gracie’s house, Relson and I got pulled over… cops with submachine guns shaking us down. Relson said “show them your military ID”… they let us go.

That day training with Grandmaster Helio at 86 years old solidified my path. The lesson he taught me still shapes everything I do at my academy today.

Water is purest closest to the source. Forever grateful. @relsongracieoriginal 🥋

Everyone has their own path in life.

As a kid I loved martial arts and was fascinated by the practice of it. Looking back at the last 20+ years, it turned out just how I thought it would. I turned my passion into my career, became a business owner so I could study my craft and teach others.

This constant pursuit of knowledge has brought so many martial arts legends into my life. Who would’ve thought this kid from Colorado would get himself into the military, get stationed in Hawaii, become a Navy Diver, and start a business… all for the love of martial arts?

Some of the biggest lessons I’ve learned:

Do the things you actually love. Don’t throw yourself into some cookie-cutter bullshit program that society wants you to fit into. Link up with like-minded people, don’t forget to take pictures, and document the journey so you can look back and remember why you started, where you want to go, and how you want your legacy to play out.

Evidence? 30 years later, I’m still just a kid who loves jiu-jitsu and the incredible people I’ve met along the way.

As always… Protect your Peace ✌️
