Il-Ġimgħa li għaddiet, Qarn rebaħ il-Premju Nazzjonali tal-Ktieb fil-kategorija Letteratura mhux Fittizja. 🏆 Inħossni kuntent ħafna li dan il-ktieb intgħoġob. Dan ix-xifajk jidher li ntlaqat u ntlaqa’. Mingħajr Loranne u Joe, Aphroconfuso, il-kamra ta’ tfuliti, u dawk il-kreaturi u l-iskerzi tan-natura kollha, żgur li ma kienx jinkiteb. Għalhekk grazzi kbira — napprezza ħafna. ❤️👹 Hawn ftit ritratti mit-tnedija ta’ Qarn ġewwa Rosa Kwir, fejn jien u @aphroconfuso kkollaborajna ma’ @an.intimate.affair u għamilna ikla u performance ċkejkna biex niċċelebraw il-ktieb. Before the conference, I paid a quick visit to @thefindouseburn to make sure the shelves were fully stocked for the weekend - including a nice stack of our September Opt Indie Book Club choice, You Know The Sun Bothers Me by @ryanfalzonreads, translated by @joegattnet. After a brilliant conversation with Ryan at The French Quarter last week, it’s almost time for us to take over and get stuck into the book ourselves. If you’d like to join us, we’ll be meeting back @fqnewcastle on Monday 28th September. Pick up a copy from The Find and come along next week, or follow the link in our bio to book your place and receive a copy in the post. Still plenty of time to get reading. See you next Monday!

What a brilliant evening with Ryan Falzon tonight at The French Quarter! A huge thank you to @ryanfalzonreads for joining us for this special Crossing Borders event, celebrating the UK publication of You Know The Sun Bothers Me. A lovely, low-key but in-depth conversation ahead of our book club in a fortnight, covering long Maltese summers, love and obsession, complicated relationships, social media, vintage cars and the millennial experience, as well as Ryan’s visual art practice, the vague line between lived experience and fiction, and what happens when a distinctly Maltese novel crosses into another language. Thanks to everyone who came along, asked questions and picked up a book. And special thanks to @foundryeditions for making it happen. If you missed us tonight, there’s still time to join the conversation. You Know The Sun Bothers Me is our September Opt Indie Book Club pick, and we’ll be back @fqnewcastle on Monday 28th September to properly get stuck into it. We’ll also have the recording of tonight’s conversation available to listen to shortly, and signed copies will be available from @thefindouseburn this week. Plenty more to come from this one!

I’m pleased to have contributed a novel, karozzakorazza, translated into English by @joegattnet , to No Need to Sparkle: Experiments in Love and Revolution, the publication accompanying the Malta Pavilion at the 61st Venice Biennale. The catalogue brings together the work and ideas surrounding this year’s Malta Pavilion, and I’m honoured to have my writing included in this publication alongside such an exciting group of artists and contributors. No Need to Sparkle: Experiments in Love and Revolution Malta Pavilion, Venice Biennale 2026 Curated by @margeritapule A special thank you to Joe Gatt for the translation, and to everyone involved in bringing the publication together. #venicebiennale #novel #catalogue #publication

It’s almost September. How the hell did that happen?! But that means we’re only two weeks away from our event with @ryanfalzonreads, and we still have a handful of tickets remaining. On Monday 14 September, we’ll be @fqnewcastle with acclaimed Maltese author Ryan Falzon, celebrating the UK publication of You Know The Sun Bothers Me, translated by @joegattnet and published by @foundryeditions. Set across one long, scorching Maltese summer, the novel takes us through love, longing, late nights, vintage cars and complicated relationships, capturing a generation caught somewhere between possibility and impermanence. “A powerfully idiomatic, warts-and-all vision of contemporary Malta.” — Alex Vella Gera, The Maltese Reader “It captures the spirit of the times.” — Mark Vella “Vintage cars, excessive drinking and moral ambiguity frame the story.” — The Times of Malta We’ll be talking to Ryan about his journey from visual artist to novelist, writing contemporary Malta, and seeing his work translated into English. You Know The Sun Bothers Me is also our September Book Club pick, making this the first half of a special Foundry Editions double-bill. Individual tickets and event + book club bundles are still available. Follow the link in our bio for more. See you soon!

Introducing Joe Gatt, the translator of our first book from Maltese YOU KNOW THE SUN BOTHERS ME by Ryan Falzon, a story of love, lust, adulthood and an ancient Fiat in one long hot Maltese summer. Joe Gatt is a writer, translator and editor. He was born in Malta, where he studied theatre at MTADA. His fiction has been published in Scintillas: New Maltese Writing, The London Magazine, and Antoloġija 1 and 2. In London, he was the editor of GSpot Magazine for five years, and did other editorial work for Vogue and The Modern Review. He has written for several publications, including The Face, Dazed & Confused and The Guardian. He is co-editor of Aphroconfuso, where his writing and translations appear regularly. Joe tells us about the book and why he wanted to translate it: “I was already an adult when I moved to the UK and I lived there for almost twenty years. Eventually, I began to see the Mediterranean with northern eyes, and for the first time in my life, the idea of a Mediterranean holiday started to make sense. But holiday destinations very easily become flattened into postcards and Instagram posts. YOU KNOW THE SUN BOTHERS ME is a snapshot of a complex urban culture that is changing very rapidly while still selling a sunny, rustic, Baroque charm to outsiders. It is the contradictions of the culture that make the place so interesting to me, and I think this book captures them perfectly. I think most Maltese reader’s first reaction when they picked up the novel was pure exhilaration. Reading the opening pages, you feel like you’ve been thrown down a water slide of pitch-perfect demotic. I was lucky to read an early draft of the novel and that’s certainly how I felt. When it came to translating it, it was the challenge of carrying this voice across into English that first made the project so attractive.” YOU KNOW THE SUN BOTHERS ME was shortlisted for the 2023 National Book Prize and the author won Malta’s National Book Prize for Best emerging Author in 2024. It is the winner of a PEN Translates award. Out now! #malteseliterature #malteseculture #readaroundtheworld #joegatt #ryanfalzon #foundryeditions

you know the sun bothers me / ryan falzon / trans. by joe gatt (maltese, 🇲🇹) school’s out for our unnamed narrator. a long hot summer stretches out before him and his fixations lie on sarah, an artist who doesn’t know what she wants. there is something about heat that dials any story up. the stakes, no matter how mundane, rise like the temperature whenever something is set in the open gaping maw of summer. the domestic, almost pedestrian worries of our unnamed narrator are set alight. what emerges is a reflection on hedonism, claustrophobia and the oppressive, awful feeling that you have no idea what you want; you just know it isn’t this. the way falzon writes has a rhythm that feels like the sun is beating down on you. the anxiety and millaise as our narrator tries to navigate love, desire and the feeling of entrapment in the place you call home is palpable. excellently translated by gatt, falzon paints a collage of young life in malta and all of its sweltering tension. it’s also at times very funny. loved loved loved this. think people will really like this if they loved evenings and weekends and i want you to be happy. also getting big victor jestin vibes. some may say, a very bratty read: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
