I am honored and privileged to announce that my film @senakulofilm will have its World Premiere at the 32nd Austin Film Festival. I’ve imagined this day for six years, and by the grace of God, it’s finally here. I am deeply grateful to Sir Ruben Enaje for his openness, kindness, and trust — for allowing both a group of strangers from halfway across the world and members of his own community to step into his life during such an intimate moment, and to document his story with honesty and care. I’m equally thankful to my extraordinary team, who believed in this vision enough to travel across the world into uncertainty and pour themselves into bringing this story to life, seven days straight, from sunrise to sunset, in relentless heat and demanding conditions. To my family, both in the Philippines and the U.S., who supported this film on the ground and from afar, thank you for lifting me up. To my post-production team who elevated this film tenfold through music, sound, color, and design, thank you. To all my friends and family who believed in this project and contributed to help bring it to life, your generosity made this dream possible. Every frame of Senakulo carries your spirit, faith, and love. This film is the truest and strongest realization of the story we set out to tell. Completing it marks the biggest artistic achievement of my career thus far, and it fills me with indescribable joy to finally share it with the world. What began as an internal exploration of my relationship to the Philippines and the faith traditions I grew up in became a rediscovery of home, culture, and belonging. Through Senakulo, I have never felt more connected to my homeland, my family, my language, and my faith than I do now. From the bottom of my heart, thank you all for believing in this journey. As the snake year is ending I wanted to share a film @joel.fear and I made for my ‘Amor Fati, when the Fire bit me’ exhibition two years ago with the snake symbol as the main thread of the show. The film is a collection of vignettes at different moments within a 7 year period—the approximate time it takes for every cell in the human body to naturally replace itself. The text switches between original short-fiction, journal entries, private conversations, text messages, as well as excerpts of existing poetry and fiction. The narrator switches also between different voices that represent each changing character or perspective. The footage is a mix of personal, found and generated video that aims to complement and contextualize the narration, if not speaking through it directly. The ouroboros figure of the serpent present throughout the film places each story along a cyclical pattern of life, death, and rebirth. The film forces the viewer to face the ground. Observing the different territories and paths of the serpent from up close, and at a great distance. Amor Fati is to love our own fate, to fully accept and surrender that everything happening is meant to be as brutal and beautiful it can be. And the importance of changing, shedding skin once you outgrow your ownself This year of the snake has been one massive shedding, little deaths and master rebirth. “Simulation is a fundamental component of planetary intelligence. This is the conclusion of the infinity mirror project…” Infinity Mirror article is an account of how simulation technologies emerged from the interplay between military strategy, video game development, GPUs, artificial intelligence, medical modeling, and Earth System Science. Organised as a multi-part research and design project, it begins by arguing that simulations are critical epistemic tools and integrates the capacity for self-representation and feedback into current discussions about what “planetary intelligence” might be. Witnessing the diffusion of simulation tech within fields such as education and manufacturing, civil engineering and climate adaptation, Infinity Mirror anticipates the creation of ever-larger and more complex systems of representation, enshrining corrective loops within the technosphere analogous to those that regulate the biosphere, a maturation of techno-civilisation on Earth that may well be a feature of evolving planets everywhere.
