'King Lear' Composer Paul Dresher is also a performer, instrument inventor, and producer whose work spans experimental opera and music theater, chamber and orchestral composition, live electro-acoustic performance, theater and dance, and large-scale invented instruments. Joel Davel is a percussionist, composer, and electronic instrument designer who combines classical training with an extensive knowledge of electronic music. His work ranges from traditional acoustic, folk, and classical music to jazz and experimental performance. The Dresher | Davel Invented Instrument Duo brings together Paul Dresher and Joel Davel in visually striking live performances combining invented acoustic and electronic instruments. For 'King Lear,' Dresher performs on the Hurdy Grande—a monumental string instrument whose strings are mechanically bowed by a motorized wheel—and keyboard, while Davel performs on the electronic Marimba Lumina and percussion. Together, they can create intricate rhythmic textures and layered electro-acoustic sound with the breadth and dramatic power of a much larger ensemble. We are less than two weeks away from the opening of "Instruments That Talk Back: Celebrating the Legacy of Don Buchla", made possible through generous support from The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage. Running from September 19, 2026 through April 17, 2027, this seven-month celebration honors the groundbreaking work of Don Buchla, whose visionary touch and motion-sensitive instruments reshaped the relationship between human and machine. The exhibition features a special limited-time physical exhibit built around EMEAPP’s collection of rare Buchla instruments, many of which will be fully operational for hands-on exploration. Visitors can also experience an immersive quadraphonic sound-art environment featuring video projections generated from a recreated Buchla slide-projector-controller. And thanks to the MEMS Project, we’ll even have a working installation of a reproduction Buchla EEG controller module — so if you’ve ever wanted to hook a synthesizer up to your brain and see what kind of music your thoughts make, this is your chance! In addition to the instrument exhibit, we’ve scheduled a dynamic lineup of Buchla artists and scholars who will bring the exhibition to life through performances, talks, and special programs. Featured contributors include Todd Barton, Ezra Buchla, Suzanne Ciani, Joel Davel, Ryan Gaston, Mark Goldstein, Ted Gordon, Steve Horelick, Mike Hunter, Kurt Kurasaki, Steve McQuarry, The MEMS Project, Ami Radunskaya, Sarah Belle Reid, David Rosenboom, Stephen Ruppenthal, Howard Moscovitz and Barry Schrader.  The opening day of the exhibition, September 19, features two afternoon lectures from The MEMS Project focusing on their slide projector and EEG controller modules. The evening features a talk/performance featuring MEMS and composer/performer Steve Horelick centered around Morton Subnotick's Buchla 100 system. All events will be livestreamed for those who cannot attend in person.  Tickets and livestream registrations are available now at tickets.themmt.org.  #museum #buchla #donbuchla #electronicmusic #musictechnology
