“I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.” 🍁✨
A few days back home on the farm in Ontario, surrounded by peak fall colors and the people who know me best.
I cooked a cozy autumn birthday supper for one of my dearest friends—roast chicken, whipped mash, zesty greens, and braised miso cabbage. With a couple of us flying in from London and others driving in from all corners of Ontario, sitting around the table reminded me that friends truly are family.
Before supper clubs in W2 were even a thought, this is where my love for cooking and gathering people around a table began.
No matter where in the world we set the table, this feeling never changes. 🕯️🌾

There are restaurants you visit & then there are restaurants that make you feel like you’ve been invited into someone’s home.

Tucked into the rolling countryside of Grey County, @downhomerestaurant is exactly that.

Founded by @joelgray6 & @hnnhharradinegray , Down Home is built around a simple idea: let the farm dictate the food.

Here, “farm-to-table” isn’t a marketing phrase. The farm is quite literally part of the restaurant. Their gardens, the surrounding farms, the beehives,the forests & the seasons all shape what eventually lands on the plate.

Joel’s cooking is deeply rooted in open-fire cooking, preservation, fermentation & foraging, with an approach that puts the ingredient first. The menu moves with the seasons & what’s grown on-site or sourced from neighbouring Grey County producers.

Hannah brings her own perspective through hospitality & oenology, creating a dining experience that feels incredibly personal & connected to place. Together, they’ve created something that feels less like a restaurant & more like an extension of their lives which is very much the case.

The experience begins beyond the dining room with a walk through the gardens, seeing the fire, learning about the producers & understanding where the ingredients come from.

This has allowed the recognition to follow.

Down Home is on the MICHELIN Guide & was named No. 39 on Canada’s 100 Best Restaurants 2026.

But what makes Down Home special is that the accolades never seem to be the destination.

The destination is the land, the people & the seasons.

And the belief that some of the most compelling food doesn’t need to come from somewhere grand. Sometimes, you just need to look outside the kitchen door; for them it was their kitchen door.

Toronto’s chef community is showing major love ahead of the 2026 @michelinguide, and we’re absolutely here for it.

@blogto asked Ontario’s top chefs who they think deserves recognition, and it turned into a love letter to the local dining scene. @georgeonqueen came up twice, with both Chef Ko (@isaan_der) and @ambica.jain (@adrakyorkville) calling it a true Toronto institution - while George’s own Chef Lorenzo Loseto returned the favour, backing @lilianarestaurant and @bar.eugenie.

Meanwhile, @wok_lobster (@akin.toronto) is hoping to see @adrakyorkville back on the list, and out in St. Catharines, @chef.zachsmith (@fatrabbit) and @joelgray6 (@downhomerestaurant) are trading praise for @takja_bbq and @barlesincompetents - proof the province’s food scene extends well beyond the city.

Nothing like watching chefs hype up chefs.
