WE’RE NUMBER 2!!!!!

This year the Georgia Straight had its annual BEST OF VANCOUVER, and we are shocked and excited to announce that our beloved festival Run N Gun was named the second best film festival in Vancouver

Still haven’t been able to de-throne VIFF which usually gets number 1 every year and has been running for 45 years. But stoked to see our baby make it to number 2, and it’s all of you that make that happen!

Huge shout out to @queerfilmfest for grabbing the number 3 slot!

I have always had a huge amount of admiration for @joelmccarthy .

He has this incredible way of bringing people together simply by being himself, speaking his mind, and calling out the things he sees that are wrong or unjust.

And on top of that, he’s a ridiculously talented filmmaker.

Joel has been a champion of indie film in Vancouver for well over a decade. Through Run N Gun and his own work as a writer and director, he has built community, created opportunities for other filmmakers, and earned an enormous amount of respect from the people around him.

He has also had the courage to blaze his own path in an industry that can be pretty unforgiving when you step outside the expected lines.

An endorsement from Joel feels a little like an endorsement from the underdogs. From the community of filmmakers I have worked so hard to represent, support, and lift up throughout the years.

Indie filmmaking is where the magic happens.

You don’t have enough time. You definitely don’t have enough money. You have to get creative when something goes wrong, trust the people around you, and figure it out together.

It’s basically the ultimate team sport 😂

And honestly, there are a lot of lessons from indie filmmaking that I think translate pretty well to public service.

Thank you, Joel, for your friendship through the years, your encouragement, your commitment to community, and for believing in me.

Your endorsement means the world 🌎

Today I had the honour of sitting on a panel for the Catalyst program at @viffest , representing @gemsvancouver (Gender Equity in Media Society), alongside two other incredible Vancouver film organizations:

@rngfest represented by @joelmccarthy , and
@filmablesociety represented by @saraluisablake

Our conversation topic? COMMUNITY.

It couldn’t have been more perfect.

We had an engaged cohort of filmmakers at the beginning of their careers, talking about just how essential community can be to building a career in this industry. The three groups on the panel have created community in very different ways, each as meaningful as the next.

What really struck me was that each of these communities exists because someone saw a gap. They saw something missing, something that wasn’t working, or people who weren’t being served, and instead of simply accepting it, they decided to do something about it.

Someone on the panel said there’s no sense complaining about a system or a problem if you aren’t willing to step up and help solve it. That really stuck with me.

I love my film community. This industry can be wild, unpredictable and, at times, incredibly isolating. Community reminds us that we don’t have to navigate it alone.

After the panel, I also had a wonderful conversation about accessibility in film that got me thinking about how arts funding can better support productions working with cast and crew who have accessibility needs. There is so much more we can do to make sure people have what they need to participate fully in our industry.

I left today feeling energized and excited about what’s possible when we work together.

I look forward to continuing to work with these groups, and so many others, to support and strengthen our filmmaking community here in Vancouver 💚🎬

It was an absolute honour to be a sponsor at this years @rngfest film festival and to attend the closing gala.
Seeing what @joelmccarthy has accomplished over the last decade is truly inspiring and exactly what vancouver needs.
A real film incubator for up and coming filmmakers with real community support.
Can’t wait to continue to see what this festival creates moving forward and a special thank you to @hudsonwilliamsofficial for supporting this amazing event. I know it made everyone’s night to have you there.

Also I swear my date was happy to be with me. He just has resting bitch face in pictures. @themassiahcomplex
