Back in June, I had the honour of joining Hakaya of Home–A Celebration of Stories, Culture & Belonging, hosted by Bukjeh (@bukjeh) and led by the extraordinary Palestinian artist Aseel Tayah (@aseeltayah).

Held in the intimate Ode to Sirens (@ode_to_sirens ) Shoulder Room in Fremantle, this gathering brought voices together in a powerful act of collective memory and resistance. Every song, every story, every silence was an offering for Palestine, for the displaced, and for those rebuilding a sense of home across time and border.

It was a space of breathing and remembering. For those who have lost their homeland. For those raising children between languages and legacies. For those still dreaming safety into existence.

I shared my performance piece, Deconstructing a Lullaby, as a small but loving act of solidarity. It held within it the children of Palestine, those who deserve lullabies woven with peace, not the echo of bombs and the crack of gunfire. This piece was for them.

All proceeds from the event went directly to urgent aid for families in Gaza.

Deep thanks to Bukjeh, Aseel Tayah, and Joel Evans (@joeltevans ) for creating this space, and for your tireless work for justice. And to the brilliant creatives who shared the stage with grace and fire: Patrick Gunasekera, Ayo Busari (@ayo.busari ), Asha Rajan (@asha_rajan_writer ), Ange Yang (@vegemitecongee ), and Tao Issaro (@taoissaro ). What a privilege to share space with you.

Grateful to have stood in that room. Shoulder to shoulder. Voice to voice. With so many powerful artists and allies.

🍉 Freo folks! This is for you! 🍉

Hakaya of Home (plus open mic)
When: Today, 15th of June from 2pm to 5pm
Where: Ode to Sirens—Shoulder Room

Hakaya means stories in Arabic, and Hakaya of Home brings together refugee and migrant voices, artists, performers, and storytellers in one big celebration of belonging. It's a space where children perform their family's stories, where aunties serve food that tastes like memory, and where art builds bridges between us all.

I feel so privileged to be performing 'Deconstructing a Lullaby' today for Hakaya of Home and Bukjeh (@bukjeh ) and under the guidance of Assel Tayah (@aseeltayah ). There is an incredible lineup of poets and storytellers who will pluck at your heartstrings and make your heart soar: Asha Rajan (@asha_rajan_writer ), Patrick Gunasekera, Ayo Busari (@ayo.busari ), Ange Yang (@vegemitecongee ), Jack Collard (@brrrbook ), and Tao.

Here's a teaser. Come, experience the complete performance!

子Child

Darkness spills into my cradle, under my blanket.
Slips between folds of your caring arms
Like a coiled serpent.
—A daemon lurking, waiting to steal my soul. I flightless,
But your song,
Mother, like a lament filled with sadness,
And your voice, honeyed.
Your eyes bright with light

I really love the provocation/ prompt here- “It’s a day to pause, breathe, and remember where we come from, all of us together. For those who have lost home, left it behind, or are still trying to recreate it , this is for you. For those raising children between languages, borders, and memories , this is for them too. At the heart of Hakaya is Palestine , but wrapped around it are stories from many lands, told in many tongues, Stories of mothers and grandmothers. Of war and wonder. Of laughter, food, and survival.”

So yeah.
See you tomorrow 👊

The time is here my friends!!! A Room Full of Feelings no.7 at @freobuffclubofficial this thursday 9th of January!!!

To get into that new years reflective spirit, we're doing something a little different this time around! This edition i'm inviting back guests from previous shows to read poems and sing songs by other people whose art they're inspired by :').

In the first half we'll have the poets words soundtracked by Ken Meyer on steel tongue drum and with an ableton controller (I don't know what either of those instruments even are but I am very very excited to find out!) and in the second half it will all be soundtracked by our silence. There's some amazing performers who I absolutely adore all throughout this night so I'm super keen for us all to discover what poems and songs they adore!!!!

Also, to keep up the shaking things up in the new year energy, we'll be trying out running this show upstairs at the Buffalo Club for the very first time, on the stage built by the Buffalo club president himself and a bunch of friends over the years for old backyard gigs for @jugular_collective events back in the day! Aaaaand, to keep that community spirit running strong as a tall tall tree through 2025, and, because I'm so fucken sick of invoices, i'm'a be trying out donating proceeds from each show to different causes. So, this first time around the very very vast majority of very very small earnings will be going directly to the Buffalo Club itself, this delightfully volunteer run pub and music venue that had a section of their ceiling flood and collapse last month, to help them finance all the millions of things that this brilliant place both needs and deserves!!!

So, if you love the Buffalo club, if you love any or all of these terrific performers lovingly playing for free, if you love poetry, if you love music, if you love community, if you love me (hehehe!), and/or if you just love sitting on the ground with a drink in your hand, then come on down to the Buff, walk the steps to the upstairs stage and come enjoy another poetry night!

Thursday 9 Jan, upstairs stage, $10/ $5 for buff members, 7pm start, see ya then xxxx

🔥How good was last night hey?!🔥

👅MOTHER TONGUE—We took the stage by storm and set it on fire!💥

❤️‍🔥Thanks to the Motherhood Collective—Miriam Wei Wei Lo, Natalie Damjanovich-Napoleon, Melissa Domiati, Carly Beth, and Asha Rajan, for your searing, sensational performance! To Selina Peng with "Doors" for the care and gentleness with which you delivered your work. It was magical to share the stage with you brilliant folk.🌟✨

📜I performed my hybrid, multimedia, collage poem—"Deconstructing a Lullaby," and let the poem take flight through embodied language, expression, image, and song. The lullaby came to life and we all got a chance to become little children again, listening to the first words seep from our mother's tongue.🎶

🙏🏽A heartfelt thank you to everyone who made it and supported our event, it was wonderful to have you. Special thank you to you lovely people, you know who you are, who took the time to let us know how much you appreciated the production and presentation. After days, weeks, and months of effort it was lovely to listen to the affirmations that came pouring in. We are infinitely grateful. ❤️

🟦 Thank you to the Blue Room Theatre for providing us with Perth's finest performance venue for the night. This is surely going to be the first of many many nights of poetry to come! Thank you to Sukhjit, Joel, Ayo, Pete and Simonne, and to the staff and volunteers at the front desk and bar helping during the night.🔹🔷

💐Massive thanks to Keely Johnston for all your help with the tech, set up, and stage management. Especially for your insight and care. We would be lost without you.🌸

📸 Gratitude to Brett Leigh Dicks for capturing the essence of the event so beautifully with your masterful photos. To Roe, for your beautiful designs and posters that helped promote the event. To Em, for your gentle presence and assistance throughout.🤗

🎤This event was presented by WA Poets Inc in collaboration with The Blue Room Theatre as a part of the Perth Poetry Festival 2024.🏁
