BUBBAS BACKYARD ULTRA 2026

October 3-6, 2026

65 laps, 227.5 miles, 5th place

The race I run every year! Imagine someone telling you last year 65 laps would only get you 5th place at Bubba’s? The field definitely came to play this year! It was super cool and such an honor to be a part of the “Final Five” that were battling it out for a total of 25 hours together!

This course is so brutal, but I’ve learned from last year to not die in the chair. I refused. There were so many opportunities for me to just walk away but I knew I could go more. My calf got super tight starting around lap 45, right after night 2 ended, and it just kept getting worse from there. But there is always more in the well. Before the race, I said I was ready to bury myself.

Then at night 3 I kept falling asleep on trail. But I kept going to the point where I collapsed in the field. I died on the course, and not in the chair. It wasn’t how I expected the result to be, but at least this year at bubbas I can say that I gave it my all.

The support this year was insane. My crew, pacers, and the whole community really showed up like they always do but this year seemed different. My crew and I improve on our strategies every year and I can’t thank them enough for staying with me for so long and taking care of me for hours on end, knowing what I’d need after each lap.

I had a total of 11 pacers which is absolutely incredible, some came up all day, or all night, some came multiple times and some were surprises!

And for the community, man people showed up. More people than ever, there had to be an overflow parking lot which is the first I’ve seen in my 4 years of running this race. And there was also a fundraiser that @runthewhites set up for the Final Five! Thank you everyone for a wonderful and successful Bubba’s Backyard Ultra!

I’m still not really sure how to sum up 80 (+1) laps at Bubba’s, especially since I don’t remember a lot of them. That many laps leaves room for many many highs (especially Sunday night, which was a fever dream of Christmas lights, blue razzmatazz slushies, and haikus) and many many lows (spending most of the day on Sunday feeling like I was floating outside of my body, having a full mental breakdown (this did fix the floating feeling though lol), spending several days running on a busted knee, and falling asleep on my feet). This all ended with me not knowing where I was, who I was, or what I was supposed to be doing, and seeing (and smelling??) lots of things that were not there.

I was really hopeful that this would be the year we would finally see a woman win this event. That didn’t end up being the case, but I still got to spend a whole 3.5 days being silly in the woods and being supported by my friends. At this point, the most important Bubba’s magic for me is that this race led me to this weird little group of people who like running around in the woods together and are always ready to support one another, even if it’s in doing something kinda stupid.

Bubba’s will always have a special place in my heart, but I think it’s time to try doing some fun things that don’t make me so anxious that I throw up before even leaving my apartment.

Very very obviously this would not have been possible without @waltonrea and @jacob.of.ohio who put up with my bullshit, helped me keep the ship as on-course as possible, spoon-fed me things I didn’t really want to eat, collected my jacket from me on about a billion laps, filled and refilled and refilled my flask with “blue,” and stayed focused and encouraging. And @kate.j.moynihan @russjgrant and @post.wild who jumped in to provide extra crewing support.

Thank you also to friends who talked at me for many laps when my brain was too tired to entertain itself but not yet tired enough to come up with new entertainment in the form of forgetting what the heck I was even doing: @acopeland603 @russjgrant @amanda_j_fisher @post.wild @danbrownontrail @hilarymccloy @colincwilson @chipolich and of course Jacob and Walton who someh
