Thank you to everyone who joined us for the opening of There Once Were Millions: A Monarch Exhibit! This evening of art and ecology was full of hope, concern, and possibility.

From the creative shell workshop with Low Hanging Fruit to the screening of Creating the West Marin Monarch Sanctuary & the inspiring panel discussion that followed, the evening offered many ways to connect with the western monarch’s story.

A special thank you to our wonderful panelists: filmmaker Ole Schell and the local experts, including Joey Algiers, who shared their knowledge and passion.

Your perspectives helped bring the exhibition’s themes to life.

And of course, thank you to artist Elizabeth Weber for sharing work that invites us to pause and imagine a future where monarchs often fill our skies.

There Once Were Millions is a celebration but also an invitation: to notice what remains, to learn from those doing the work, and to help ensure the monarch’s story continues.

Gratitude to our partners who made this evening possible: Studios 3026 and artists, West Marin Monarch Sanctuary, Resource Conservation District of the Santa Monica Mountains, and Ventura County Resource Conservation District🧡

🎙️ Introducing Field Philosophies, a new podcast from SAMO Fund Field Institute.

Through conversations with ecologists, artists, land stewards, historians, and community leaders, Field Philosophies explores the ideas, relationships, and questions that shape our understanding and connection to the living world.

For our first episode, National Park Service Plant Ecologist and Vegetation Branch Chief, Joey Algiers joins us to discuss the relationship between invasive plants and wildfire in the Santa Monica Mountains. Together, we explore how something as small as a non-native seed can alter the way a landscape burns and influences the future of an entire ecosystem.

The first Miyawaki-inspired #microforest in #losangeles was planted in June of 2021 at Bette Davis Picnic Area in #GriffithPark. Adapted from the #MiyawakiMethod of #afforestation, this “forest” features a plant palette resembling the dense #oakwoodland and #chaparral #plantcommunities of Griffith Park.

#pocketforests such as these are designed to survive solely on #rainfall after establishment as well as naturally resist weed invasion due to the #density of planting, shade-producing #growth, and smothering #leaf litter. A whole #ecosystem approach to #landscapes that #restores #life above and below ground.
