Recently shown at Galerie Perrotin Paris, Les Chiens de Pavlov is a solo exhibition by Belgian artist Johan Creten.

The exhibition looks at how yesterday’s dreams shape today’s reality. Johan Creten’s father collected early computers for decades. After his father’s death, Creten turned them into a large wall, a tribute to him and a question about memory and technology.

The title nods to Pavlov, who rang a bell before feeding his dogs until they reacted to the bell alone. Creten mixes personal history, technology, and political allegory to make us question our automatic responses.

The Herring

The sculpture titled THE HERRING plays on “la mer” (the sea) and “la mère” (the mother), recalling the winter of 1942-1943, when so much herring washed ashore on Belgium’s coast that people scooped it up by hand. Is the sea’s supply endless, or does it give and take, as it always has?

The Bat

“De Vleermuis” is one of Johan Creten’s most iconic bronze works. The work is monumental, participatory and sensitive. A staircase shaped into its back allows visitors to climb the sculpture).

Mysterious, fascinating and intriguing. The bat is attributed multiple interpretations. Everyone sees something different, just like the sculpture.

Why does Strange Fruit always looks so sweet?

While working and living in Mexico, Johan Creten fell ill and exhausted. He looked out his window at the date palms and saw something strange. The fruit looked just like the swollen glands troubling his skin.

That fever vision became a sculpture asking why something painful can look so tempting.

LA SOLFATARA is the venue that houses artist Johan Creten’s studio.

Born in Belgium in 1963 and based in Paris, artist Johan Creten is a pioneer of the revival of ceramics in contemporary art. Since the 1980s—when ceramics were neglected because they were considered taboo—the artist has worked tirelessly with clay, developing innovative and masterful techniques. Created in Mexico or Miami, Rome or The Hague, his famous allegorical sculptures—in bronze or ceramic—construct a world filled with poetry, lyricism, and mystery, haunted by beauty and imbued with social and political significance. Embracing “Slow Art,” Johan Creten’s work celebrates individual introspection and societal exploration, as intimate anxieties and collective torments come to the surface.
