Hoo boy. It’s taken me a hot minute to revisit Ironman Wisconsin and write up a little race report to share. Not because I’m not proud of the outcome. Quite the opposite, in fact. I needed some time to process the day before I could write about it this time (unlike past races where I needed to write about it to process the day).

First of all, I need to express my deep gratitude to my partner John Estes. While the race itself is one day, there is so much time, emotion, and physical bandwidth that goes into a big huge race like this. I literally could not have done it without your support. Thank you for all of the times you took the lead on the laundry, the housekeeping, the laundry, cooking, child/pet care, and also laundry. Thank you for showing our boys what it looks like to show up for your partner and help them chase their dreams.

My coach Mary Robinson also deserves all the kudos. Thank you for also supporting this wacky plan to do two Ironmans in less than 12 months.

Going into the race, I’ll be honest. I was burnt out. I was burnt out back in July, and Mary and I were having conversations about if I would still go through with it. Being as stubborn as I am, I resolved that yes, I would push through but shift my goals.

My body also decided to let me know that I needed to adjust my expectations. Most of the time, I don’t think about living without a thyroid (aside from taking my meds every morning and the few times a year I see my endocrinologist). This training block, I did need to think about it. And see my endocrinologist. And have discussions about adjusting my training, rest, and medication dosage. Turns out, when you’re training A LOT and also working full time and parenting, your body needs a fair amount of thyroid hormone. And if you don’t happen to have one, that can be a problem. (See also, me waiting for someone to develop an at home finger poke test to check my TSH and adjust my daily thyroxine.)

To be continued...

Week Twenty - MoMA Inspired Artfits (Fulham’s pick)

12/19 - School is cancelled, Fulham spun around @wheelhouse_clay on his tricycle while I spun lots of clay on the wheel. We had the studio all to ourselves for a bit. Coffee, pastries, and a lunchtime swim. Fun day!
