Truly one of my new favorite places on earth: Haystack Mountain School of Craft — aka adult summer camp for craft. Had the complete joy of doing the Square One fiber workshop with @john.fifieldperez and @emilysilverstudio. Shared meals, the best “loommates,” the most inspiring architecture and nature.

To kick off, John had us warping before we fully grasped the cross — just trusting the process. We learned to figure it out with our hands before our heads. 80% of the workshop was setting up the floor loom. 20% was weaving. And a fair amount of just feeling for whether the tension was right — learning what “right” feels like before you have the language for it. That’s the know-how. A feeling you build, not one you’re told.

We kept coming back to this question: what does making have to do with being human? The world isn’t just static objects. We’re wired to work with our hands, to turn raw material into something meaningful — and the world greets you differently once you’ve felt that. There are ways of being human some of us never get the chance to realize, a gift @haystack_school gives.

Forever grateful to Andrew and Bosco from @arkdeerisle for the off-the-cuff recommendation that turned into the most magical, unexpected week. Deer Isle forever holds a special place in our family’s heart.

Weaving Beyond the Binary at @haystack_school was a joy. Two weeks away from the world teaching weaving by the ocean is a gift. This was a special community of people—artists and scholars who are my colleagues, academics at the height of their fields exploring a new world, artist/educators/researchers moving through the early years of their careers, students at the beginning of their journey, and weavers following curiosity for the love of making all came together. Thank you for transcending hierarchy, and for your deep connection to one another. The community established in this space was incredible beyond words, and the work you produced in two weeks is nothing short of astounding. Thank you to @john.fifieldperez , studio assistant fellow, I could not have done this without you. It is a unique joy when a student becomes a colleague, thank you for that as well. Beyond it all, this was a space where queer people of many perspectives, bodies, and beings were able to come together and be our authentically queer selves. In a world that has become increasingly cruel we need these spaces more that ever. I am moved beyond words that queer people were radically and joyfully queer here. Thank you to @haystack_school for providing the platform. Much love to you all, divas 😘
