As a coach my style has always been to work within the framework of the individual. Every fighter and every student requires a different tone, a different learning curve, and an emphasis on different aspects of technique. It’s difficult managing several different personalities, sizes and skill sets within a room, but that to me is what makes the job. For me it’s impossible to separate the fighter or student from who they are as a person. That’s why, to me joining the right martial arts gym is like joining a family because we go through the highest highs and lowest lows all together in the spirit of progressing ourselves as people. Like I always say let martial arts be something that makes your life better and if your privileged enough to get to compete make the most of it.

@john.kurschner wins his Amateur MMA debut by split decision after a #fightofthenight against another tough young debut fighter. Respect and future success to him and his team! And Thank you to deadseriousmma for matching John up and running an awesome show!

This fight was a long time coming for John. I remember telling him 2 years ago he’d eventually fight at 135lbs.. he didn’t believe me 🤣

His opponent was great at setting up his takedown attempts but John was able to stuff or transition almost every takedown into a guillotine attempt. He used the guillotine attempts to sweep to top position. He ended the first round with a uchi mata up against the cage. Standing up it was a war wherein both guys landed great strikes. John landed spinning back kicks, round kicks, and heavy hands. Incredibly Proud of John this wasn’t an easy fight by any means, and he still made a good account of himself in terms of preparation, performance and poise especially for a debut fighter.

Thanks to Coach Mateusz for his additional guidance and help throughout fight camp and in the corner.

And the whole team of members who make @odyssey_mixed_martial_arts a place where everyone can achieve their goals together!
