Autism and Music - Safety, Regulation, Communication 🎧

From a very young age, music was my rock. It helps me cope with sensory overload, regulate my emotions, relate with others, and communicate more clearly. But this isn’t just me. Music is so important to the Autistic community, and the children’s music community understands that.

Suddenly, I had something to talk to people about. Music also activates the reward center of the brain - and for someone who was constantly searching for stimulation and dopamine, it felt so good. I am also a perfectionist, so when I found out I had pitch recall and musicality, I thrived on the positive experience.

Music also brought me closer to safe and kind adults. It was always the adults in the music program that I felt I could unmask the most around.

I now use music to connect with the next generation of kids - both neurotypical and neurodivergent. I can use it to convey lessons of kindness, acceptance, love, and self-regulation.

This is Ellie! Ellie is Autistic and was also born with Cerebral Palsy. She loves expressing herself through music and regulating herself with the music of some of her favorite artists - Laurie Berkner and Ms. Rachel! I am hoping to collaborate with Ellie and her family on some awesome inclusive and neurodivergent-affirming music in the future!

This is Odin. Odin is Autistic and was also born with Cerebral Palsy. He expresses himself through a variety of instruments, including the piano. Although his musical tastes span lots of musicians, his his personal favorite right now is John Baptiste. You can catch Odin over on his page @allthingsfrost to see what he is listening to at home and in the car.

Outside of working on Lilypad Library, I make music for kids. My first album, Connecting the Dots, is on all streaming platforms. I’ve grown a lot since the production of this album, and can’t wait to make a second album. I have so many ideas - centering on love, kindness, and inclusion - but also dance moves that kids with physical disabilities can join in on!
