LEADING PAEDIATRIC DESIGN | Last week we were on site for the construction completion announcement of the new Sydney Children’s Hospital Stage 1 and Minderoo Children’s Comprehensive Cancer Centre – one of the most significant health projects in the country, located within the newly reimagined Randwick Health & Innovation Precinct.

We were joined by the Federal Health Minister, Hon Mark Butler MP, State Health Minster, Hon Ryan Park MP, and Member for Coogee, Dr Marjorie O’Neill, plus other key stakeholders from NSW Health.

The 12-storey building features the latest health facilities and dedicated spaces designed to support children and their families across NSW throughout their healthcare journey.

In a first for Australia, childhood cancer research and the clinical care of children with cancer will integrate into one paediatric facility, accelerating the translation of research discovery into improved clinical practice.

Designed by BLP in collaboration with Health Infrastructure, Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network and Children’s Cancer Institute, this new paediatric hospital building integrates care, cancer and neuroscience research, and family support in one purpose-built space.

SUSTAINABLE & TECHNICAL INNOVATION | The Sydney Children’s Hospital and Minderoo Children’s Comprehensive Cancer Centre embraces environmental and social sustainability through a comprehensive approach addressing UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The facility’s ‘sustainability sandwich’ design strategically places laboratories between clinical floors, allowing for triple the facilities workforce, yet only double the space requirements with activity-based planning.

“The future of sustainable laboratories is about reducing energy consumption, but also designing spaces that adapt to changing research methods without requiring extensive renovation or replacement. It’s an exciting time to see these developments for the future of our children’s health and their families,” says Bettina Bartos, Principal & Science and Technology Lead, BLP.

TRANSFORMATIVE HEALTH PRECINCT | Seamlessly connected to Sydney’s light rail, the new Sydney Children’s Hospital located in the Randwick Health & Innovation Precinct creates an active, pedestrian-friendly campus, sharing a vibrant public plaza with the UNSW Health Translation Hub.

Inspired by Bidjigal Country and the nearby sea cliffs, the design brings light, shadow, and texture into two sculptural C-shaped floorplates wrapped around a central courtyard. “Through light, shadow, depth and pattern, the building design acknowledges the systems and cultural stories of the area,” says Brad Dorn, Design Lead, BLP. “With community consultation, the colours and materials were chosen for their resonance with Country, creating the uplifting, positive, coloured architectural response.”

Landscaped terraces, biophilic balconies, and welcoming outdoor spaces enhance wellbeing for patients, families, researchers and staff —while First Nations narratives are integrated into the interiors and wayfinding through Yerrabingin’s Wanggani Dhayar process.

WELCOMING FIRST PATIENTS | The new Sydney Children’s Hospital in Randwick, incorporating Australia’s first Children’s Comprehensive Cancer Centre, has welcomed its first patients, marking a transformative step forward in children’s healthcare design.

BLP’s design philosophy focuses on creating familiar, nurturing environments that actively support healing for children, offering a ‘home away from home’ to improve recovery and wellbeing. “Our goal has been to use our expertise and latest research in paediatric design to build a once-in-a-generation precinct that supports patients, their families, and the support networks around them,” says Tara Veldman, Managing Director, BLP.”We know children heal in hospitals that have been purpose-designed for them, especially when their full spectrum of needs, including clinical, emotional and social, are met.”

The new building is also home to the new Minderoo Children’s Comprehensive Cancer Centre, offering fully integrated clinical care and translational research laboratories positioned adjacent to each other.

With single-occupancy patient rooms, 24/7 access to multi-purpose family spaces, a food delivery service window, interactive play areas and discovery zones, biophilic design elements, and visible research laboratories, the facility sets a new standard for healing spaces aimed at improving children’s health outcomes.

BLP has concurrently designed two tertiary paediatric hospital buildings in Greater Sydney - the new Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick building and The Children’s Hospital at Westmead Stage 2 Redevelopment, representing the largest investment in paediatric health care in NSW.

EHDC SHORTLIST | The new Footscray Hospital and The Sydney Children's Hospital Stage 1 & Minderoo Children's Comprehensive Cancer Centre have been shortlisted for the European Healthcare Design Awards 2026.

The new Footscray Hospital has been shortlisted in both the ‘large scale health infrastructure’ and ‘excellence in healthcare planning’ categories, while SCH+MCCCC has been shortlisted in both the ‘Design for health and life sciences’ and ‘Interiors and the arts’ categories.

We look forward to the London event this June, where the winners will be announced!

SOCIAL INFRASTRUCTURE COMMENDATION | The Sydney Children’s Hospital Stage 1 + Minderoo Children’s Comprehensive Cancer Centre is a transformative healthcare project combining treatment, research and family-centred design, co-designed with clinicians, children and families, into a single integrated destination. The result is a benchmark for healthcare infrastructure that will benefit generations of Australian families.

Last Friday night, it was chosen as a special commendation for Social Infrastructure at the Urban Developer Awards for Industry Excellence 2026.

The awards have become an industry-leading platform recognising excellence across property development, design, construction, technology and innovation. The judges praised the Sydney Children’s Hospital for its patient-centred precinct design, Indigenous storytelling, research integration and complex delivery.

A few months back I had the pleasure of capturing photos and video for TTW of the recently opened Westgate Tunnel in Melbourne. Here is a selection of photos taken at various times throughout the day. The roadway was very quiet due to it being a public holiday.

A landmark for the thousands of Melburnians who drive through it every day.

How do you balance complex geometry while keeping the design intent? That was the challenge behind the vent structures on Melbourne's West Gate Tunnel. The design called for a striking, complex geometry but every curve had to carry load and move air.

Using computational modelling, our engineers across Structural, Digital, Façade and Construction teams refined the geometry into a more efficient design without compromising the architectural vision.

MELTON RAILWAY STATION | CONNECTING PEOPLE TO PLACE

A story of Country, culture and connection, brought to life through architectural design and precision craftsmanship.

We’re proud to share our recently completed work at Melton Railway Station, featuring intricate Aboriginal artwork designed by the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation.

Inspired by the story of Gurborra the Koala, the artwork reflects the cultural significance of the surrounding landscape, celebrating community, connection to Country and the waterways that sustain life.

Working alongside Genton, John Holland and Heritage Glass, Cutout transformed the original artwork into a series of custom CNC routed panels, carefully preserving its intricate patterns, lettering and cultural symbolism.

Manufactured from 5mm metal, with precision-routed detailing and a specialised textured finish, the installation brings depth, warmth and character to the station’s pedestrian through-link.

More than an architectural feature, it’s a lasting connection between people, story and place.
