Summer of Sublime pt4: fin

The older I get, the more convinced I am that play is not a luxury; it’s a necessity.

This week at #smithmountainlake Lake, cousins, grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings, old friends, neighbors, and even long-lost cousins gathered together. Some familiar faces were missing because life is full and schedules are complicated. Every year the crowd is a little different, but the invitation is always open.

We spent our days playing cards, sharing homemade meals, singing with guitars, swimming, #wakesurfing, #kayaking, working out on the dock, spotting deer in the woods, reading good books, and laughing at family stories that somehow get better with age.

But what mattered most wasn’t the activities—it was the conversations they created.

Because behind every smile is a story. Within the souls represented were heartaches few people see, cancer diagnoses, broken hearts, struggles at home, questions of faith, and seasons of joy and redemption. None of us arrive untouched by life. Perhaps that’s all the more reason to gather.

Our family doesn’t agree on everything. We never have. But we choose relationship over division, love over winning arguments, and presence over proving points. In a world that can feel rushed, divided, and lonely, that feels worth protecting.

We’re grateful for the generations who loved, sacrificed, forgave, persevered, and pointed us toward what matters most. Because of them, we get days like these in the sun.

So this isn’t really a post about our family. It’s an encouragement:
Gather your people. Invite the neighbor. Take the walk. Play the game. Share the meal. Tell the stories. Put the phone down for a while.

Years from now, you may not remember who won the card game or stayed up longest on the surfboard, but you’ll remember how it felt to belong.
And we’ll keep praising God for the redemption in our stories, the people who loved us along the way, and the beautiful world He has given us to enjoy together.
