👴🏻🐟BISHOP FISH🐟👴🏻
The Bishop Fish was found on the coast of the #Baltic Sea and brought to the King of Poland in the 16th century. The king wished to keep the #strange #creature as a #curiosity, however; according to #legend, the #humanoid #fish in the garb of a #bishop was then presented to a group of #Catholic Bishops. The fish pleaded with them and eventually was successful in convincing the king and bishops to grant the #creatures release.

🐟#5: I couldn’t find any references for this image but I thought it gave a pretty accurate representation of the description of the creature. It’s assumed to likely be an AI generation of the description.

🐸AMAZING #FROG #CRYPTID #ART🐸
All over the world people have reported seeing these strange #amphibious creatures, from giant #frogs to frog rain, people truly believed in their existence at least at one point in time. These artworks are created in reference to the descriptions or sightings of frog-like #cryptids, acting as a police sketch for what #creatures might lurk in hiding.
.
1🐸
“Vodyanoy the Water Sprite” by Russian artist Ivan Bilibin in 1934
The #Vodyanoy is native to Eastern Europe. Vodyanoy is a man eating evil creature that slurps down humans and animals with its extra-long sticky tongue. Local believers were even known to offer sacrifices to appease the angry Vodyanoy.
2🐸
“The Loveland Frog” illustrated by John Meszaros in 2019 as part of his series “Cryptids State by State”
The Loveland Frog is a beloved legend in the town of #Loveland Ohio. Multiple reports of sightings occurred since the first report in 1955. The frogs were described as giant frogs with man legs in nearly every description, connecting each case and solidifying the local belief of the creatures existence.
3🐸
“The Loveland Frog” by Ron Schaffer as featured in Bord and Bord in 1989
The second sighting was by a police officer, who thought he had found a dead dog in the road, only to watch the animal promptly get up on its hind legs revealing its frog-like appearance and hop a guard rail. This illustration is very closely based on one presumably sketched by that officer himself.
4🐸
“Lo!” Illustration of Frog Rain by Charles Fort featured in an issue of “Astounding Stories” in 1934
The illustration was to accompany what was then regarded as investigative scientific text exploring the causes of unexplainable events such as the Frog Rain that had apparently occurred throughout history. Why was it raining frogs? Charles Fort suggested in his writing that teleportation was the true explanation.
5🐸
Woodcut illustration of Frog Rain from Conrad Lycosthenes’ “Prodigiorum ac Ostentorum Chronicon, an account of wonders and strange phenomena” in 1557
This much older depiction of Frog Rain supports the notion that Frog Rain used to be a real occurrence, or at least, believed to be.

🐳GLOBSTER CRYPTIDS🐳
A #globster is an #unidentified #marine corpse that washes on the #shore. The decomposition of the #animal obscures everything we know about it. These #globsters are or were believed to be entirely distinct #creatures #unknown to the #scientific #community.
.
Trunko
#Trunko is probably the most #famous #beast to wash upon the shore. In 1924 the giant white fluffy #creature appeared on the beach of Margate South #Africa. Trunko had a long trunk like appendage and a visible head, leading to the depictions we see of the animal. Unlike other globsters, Trunko was said to be alive, battling killer #whales for hours, fighting them off with its tail. Trunko was even said to have lifted itself out of the water 20 feet.

The St. Augustine Monster
Dr. Dewitt Webb stands next to the carcass of the monster washed ashore the #beach in #Florida in 1896. The story of the #strange creature was highly publicized but later discovered to be a #hoax, the St. Augustine “monster” was really a decomposed whale.
.
The Monster of Monterey
In 1925 another strange carcass appeared on Moore’s Beach in Monterey Bay, #California. Due to the #monstrous appearance of the animal, people began to speculate that the corpse belonged to that of the long believed #extinct marine #reptile the Plesiosaur.
#Artists depiction of the #monster from the “Monster of Monterey” episode of Animal Planet’s “The Lost Tapes” 2009
.
The Canvey Island Monster
This local #legend is described to be a large #fish with 2 legs. This species was encountered twice in the area, once in 1953, and one in 1954.

An extinct order of stem-group arthropods, Radiodonta, lived between the Cambrian and Devonian. They have distinctive frontal appendages that were morphologically diverse and used for a variety of functions. Some species were the earliest, large predators known in Earth’s oceans, but some were sediment sifters and filter feeders. What other bizarre, evolutionary forms could these organisms take? Pictured is a radiodont that’s strikingly similar to a hermit crab—inhabiting a discarded nautiloid shell and dragging itself across the ocean floor. Stay tuned for more speculative radiodonts for issue 3 of Astrovitae!
