John Lloyd Young
Playboy Japan, October 2006

“After 9/11, I finally realized that my work has meaning.”

Fresh off his Tony Award–winning performance in Jersey Boys, John Lloyd Young approached his breakout role with a singular goal: authenticity. Determined to capture the true voice and spirit of the character, he immersed himself in careful study, refining every detail until it felt real—not imitated, but lived.

“You can’t fake it,” he says. “The audience knows.”

For Young, performance is never surface-level. It isn’t just about singing or technique—it’s about fully inhabiting the role. Each time he steps on stage, he pushes deeper, searching for something honest and immediate that audiences can feel.

His path to success, however, wasn’t straightforward. Early setbacks—including failed auditions—forced him to rethink his direction. But those moments became turning points, leading him to the role that would define his career. What once felt like rejection ultimately opened the door to something greater.

In the years following 9/11, New York was a city in recovery—yet still moving forward, driven by its people and its culture. Performing on Broadway during that time gave Young a new sense of purpose.

“After 9/11, I realized for the first time that my work has meaning.”

What had once been performance became something more: a way to connect, to contribute, and to be part of the city’s resilience.

For Young, art only matters when it’s truthful.

“I don’t sing just to perform—I sing to express something real.”

That belief is at the core of his work. The story he tells in Jersey Boys—of ambition, struggle, and growth—mirrors his own journey, making each performance deeply personal.

In the end, his goal is simple: to create something genuine—something that resonates.
