POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Yesterday, on Larry Itliong’s birthday, we rededicated the mural honoring Larry Itliong and Al Rojas at @sprinklevalley_abw, and the display of solidarity and commitment to the cause has left our hearts touched and our spirits strong.

Larry Itliong led the 1965 Delano grape strike that sparked the United Farm Workers movement, and Al Rojas, a UFW co-founder, helped carry that fight forward. Larry and Al were lifelong allies and their families continue to carry out their legacies to this very day.

The most special part of the afternoon was welcoming @johnnyitliong, Larry’s son, along with Desirée and Debra Rojas, Al’s daughters. They flew in from California for the ceremony, and it was their very first time in Texas. Thank you for trusting us with your fathers’ legacy and sharing their stories with our community. We hope the Texas BBQ treated you well!

Thank you to @fypatx for welcoming us into the Filipino Day Market during Filipino American History Month, and to @sprinklevalley_abw for giving this mural a home. To the artists who brought Larry and Al to life, @everydayresearch and @vivalapainter, your work made this moment possible. And a big thank you to Martita of @iamfarmdout for her contribution.

To everyone who came out to celebrate with us: maraming salamat 🇵🇭

Growing up Filipino-American, I had zero Filipino role models. I mean ZERO, not even one. Definitely not in my textbooks, not on my TV, not on any film or stage I ever sat in front of. It was never cool to be Filipino!

That’s how The Boy and The Manong (The Fields Are Waiting) was born. I wanted characters a young Filipino kid could look at and say, that’s who I can be. And there was no better spark than Larry D. Itliong.

A rebel. A freedom fighter. A man decades ahead of his time who refused to bow down to the norms of a country that didn’t want him. He organized, he fought, he never backed down and he loved… passionately and fiercely. That’s why there’s a love story at the heart of my musical play.

This Filipino American History Month, we performed at the Larry Itliong Day Festival 2026 sponsored by @pwcsc and I got an amazing moment with his son, @johnnyitliong . To hear him speak about his father, to listen to his experiences... I’m still sitting with it. My cast felt it too. Every one of them hung on his words. Moments like this remind you why you make art in the first place.

To Mr. Itliong: thank you. For your father’s fight, and for your time with us. Happy Larry Itliong Day!!!

The fields are still waiting. So let’s keep telling the story!

Celebrating Filipino American History Month in Chula Vista! I was honored to emcee this event in front of city hall and hear from various leaders in the community.

That includes the son of Larry Itliong, who helped lead the Delano grape strike in the 1960s. His son, Johnny, has fought for decades to make sure his dad’s contributions are not forgotten.

(Thanks @stevewoodchulavista for taking many of these photos)

Born and Raised Delano.

When I was growing a lot of people bagged on where I was from especially kababayans. Norcal and Socal Filipinos used to say "Oh you're from a farming town? gross" Never once did it fade me, because I was proud of the rich heritage here in Delano.

I rep hard and let people know where i am from all the time, but most especially this month during American Filipino History Month.

I say rep hard and never be ashamed of where you come from.

Naimbag nga aldaw 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇵🇭🇵🇭🤘🏾🤘🏾🤙🏾🤙🏾
