First new watch in a while, this one not for me but for my kid, who is a fan of Peanuts. This one obviously features Snoopy. Timex Weekender quartz. Strap is the original one supplied. Watch was well-received, kid seems to really like it. #timex #タイメックス #peanuts #vintagewatches #snoopy

Last few weeks been really enjoying wearing the 2021 Japan TIMEX x BEAMS, sterling silver “DeLuxe”-dial Camper, limited to 50 pieces. Very lucky to have it, and thanks again to those who helped me to get it. Came with a fine box and presentation. All but the crown, clasp, and caseback are 92.5% silver. Mineral glass crystal. Hacking handwound mechanical. More at bit.ly/timexsilver #タイメックス #vintagewatch #vintagewatches #timex #vintagetimex

Another great, one-of-kind gift from @wworry, this one a sterling silver pin of a 5-headed (but 8-legged) Captain Haddock, designed by Fred, based on a panel from Adventures of Tintin book “Secret of the Unicorn.” After making the 3D design, he printed and painted a few models in resin, and then shipped the file off to i.materialise of Belgium to have it printed in silver with various finishes (mine is with a satin finish). They can resolve silver designs to 0.35 mm. He then attached two posts to the back to turn it into a pin. Came pinned to hand-made paper card, embossed, and with item listed as “CH1” Captain Haddock 1. Another unique item made in his workshop in Northern California, very grateful, thanks Fred! #silver #silver925 #metalwork #jewelry #handmadejewelry #tintin #tintín #adventuresoftintin #captainhaddock #fanart #pins

Really love this sweater my wife knitted a few weeks ago. A kind of yarn where the color “changes as you go along” is the best way I can say it, creating this striped look without having to keep changing balls of yarn. My daughter liked it so much, that… it’s now hers : ) She’s been knitting on and off for several years now; initially learned it from her mom and from school where she grew up in the north of England, she’s now learned more techniques mostly from people in the internet. She’s a bit critical about some “dropped stitches” or whatnot of this sweater, but my non-knitter eye can’t see much wrong with it. Yarns she gets from various places, and some of the best needles seem to come from Europe. Even these ones have been faked! Anyway, here’s the sweater, jumper, whatever you want to call it, every time my daughter wears it it makes me happy. #knitting #knittingaddict #knittinglove #knittingpattern #sweaters #jumpers

For #28days28watches today is this 1960s (possibly 1950s but I think more likely 1960s) piece size of a pocket watch, but a stopwatch for sports referees. It does have a regular clock function, but a large seconds hand that can be stopped and started by that sliding button (that activates a lever inside the movement that contacts and stops the rotating balance!) there is no flyback, and when the secondhand stopped ticking, the whole Watch stops keeping time. Great colors and contrast. The crystal is glass. Made by WESTCLOX. #vintagewatch #vintagewatches #watches #watchesofinstagram #wristcheck

For day 2 of #28days28watches here’s a mid 1960s Rolex Submariner ref 5513 “meters first” that I bought in 2000 or 2001 from Bernardwatch in Texas. If I told you what I paid for it in 2000 some of you might actually cry. But to be clear I don’t really care, I’ve never bought a watch as “investment,” and this watch will stay with me until I shuffle off this mortal coil (or if one of my kids gets their way, long before that as a “parental gift” haha). Well, lots written about the Submariner from this era by people who know how to research and write, so I won’t try to repeat what you can find all over the web. But it’s major piece in the history of horology, and as one of my friends has said (who does know how to write,) “The Rolex Submariner is probably the most important and influential watch from the last half of the 20th century.” Well, any comment like that can be arguable, but even if let’s say it’s the 10th most influential, that’s saying a lot. The dial is matte black, the hands and dial lume have aged to a cream color, and the dial indices are without the thin metal frames that came with later versions of the 5513. Bezel is stuck in place, haven’t been able to budge it for 20+ years. I know the mineral oil trick, never mind I don’t SCUBA dive! Why is it on a knitted red (very red) hat? Another long story, but it’s dive-related, it’s a replica of a late 1800s British diving cap, knitted by an elderly lady from the Isle of Wight, so seems to fit. #vintagewatch #vintagewatches #watches #watchesofinstagram #wristcheck

If something can be simultaneously great and ridiculous, this watch is in that club. The seller called it “SOVIET TROOPS of RADIATION CHEMICAL PROTECTION USSR RUSSIAN MILITARY WATCH 70s!” And the only part of that that is accurate is the watch was made in the Soviet Union. A modified 45 mm pocket watch with a fun dial, but totally bogus claim about having anything to with radiation protection. But never mind. It was $70 from a seller in Ukraine (bought pre-invasion), it’s a bona fide mechanical hand-wound watch, runs well, has heroic proportions on the wrist. My article on this (type in bit.ly/russianrad) has some photos of the original Molnija pocket watch, some info about an actual agency called the “Troops of Radiological, Chemical and Biological Defence,” and more pics. One pic here at this post shows it next to a USB-C charging cable, to get a sense of size. Note the decoration on the back and the soldered on lugs. Been wearing it for three days and so far there have been no alarms warning me of high-level radiation! #vintagewatch #vintagewatches #watches #watchesofinstagram #wristcheck

I’ve been off work for 11 days straight, so what better watch to mark my return to work (today!) than this March 2021 collab between @timex_tokyo and @universaloverall_jp celebrating work, and acknowledging the importance of work – life balance. Pay close attention to the very weird dial. The numbers have been shifted significantly with 17:00 hours at the top of the dial, only moons after 24:00 hours. With so many demands on our time, schedule, requirements, etc., this watch is meant to highlight “my time,” from the classic “quitting time” of 5 pm until going to bed at midnight. Universal Overall is a Chicago-based manufacturer of work-related garments since 1924 (I have visited their shop!) selling not to the public but to places needing uniforms and work clothes. Universal Overall Japan is a separate company, but has licensed their name and label, and manufactures clothing based on meticulous studying of original vintage UO workers, along with their own original designs. The first pic shows the watch laying on one of their overalls. Well, back to work today, in 2 hours and 45 minutes, BUT WHO’S COUNTING. More Nigel Cabourn Timex, this the third one in the series from Spring 2020. It is the “Sea Rescue” watch, paying tribute to the Royal Air Force pilots and crew during WWII. The most notable feature is the yellow dial, meant to evoke the color of the high-visibility life vest worn by Royal Air Force pilots and crew during WWII. Uses the same single-piece molded steel case as in one earlier and two subsequent Nigels, the case developed by Timex Japan for their SST steel Camper. It’s a fine case, and was reverse engineered from an original 1980s resin Camper. (See my review for more on this). Wearing this watch today on a green nylon strap. Haha. If you’ve looked through some Japanese watch magazines and ads, you’ll occasionally see watches paired with food, sometimes even like baked into a pizza, on a hot dog covered with mustard, etc. Well, last night my son wasn’t happy with the sweet potato fries at this restaurant, and nobody else wanted to finish them or take them home. They were just sitting there. So I decided to take my own food-watch pic using the 925 sterling silver Timex Beams Camper watch, limited to 50. A superb watch. Now, a slightly greasier watch as well. bit.ly/timexsilver タイメックス #vintagewatch #vintagewatches #timex #vintagetimex
