Reading assignment for anyone moving to London: Table Hopping by Dylan Jones, the secret history of London restaurants from Langan’s Brasserie to The Wolseley.

A few weeks ago I had breakfast at The Wolseley with Josh of the @financialtimes. Anyone who’s been knows it’s all about the toast. And it reminded me why this book matters. In London, the restaurant has always been the real club. It’s where deals get done, friendships get made, and newcomers learn how the city actually works.

Picked up at John Sandoe in Chelsea, one of London’s great independent bookshops and a perfect first stop for any American finding their footing here.

A lap of Chanel to bridge the gap between appointments 💫

I called in sick on Friday (to myself), booked a HydraFacial @montrose_london, picked up fabric samples @howe.36bournestreet, bought some finishing touches from @mgandco for the utility, perused @johnsandoebooks and inhaled a almond pain au chocolat from @birleybakery because sometimes you need a me day.

john sandoe promised “all the books one could ever hope to find in one place.” then opened a bookstore in a revamped poodle parlor.

tucked off busy sloane square is my favorite independent bookseller in london. established in 1957, the store now spans three 18th-century storefronts and is stacked to the brim with nearly 30,000 titles, almost all of them single copies–i’d say he kept his promise.

i visited on one of those early fall saturdays when you can just begin to justify a coat and had the place to myself. what a contrast to livraria lello, where you have to buy a ticket simply to get in. no crowd, no queue, just a quiet room with more books than even i can get through. i spent the morning with a 2027 almanac. it opened with a poem by welsh author @rhiannon.hooson, and one line has stayed with me: “it is closer, smaller, humbler than you think.” exactly what this bookstore felt like ♥️

I had a very busy day in London for the publication of Trunks and Tiaras!

It was a full day of signing books, with visits to Daunt Books, Hatchards, Heywood Hill and John Sandoe Books. It felt as though we’d visited nearly every independent bookshop in London!

A lovely day, and such a pleasure to see the book making its way into the world. Thank you to everyone who has been so welcoming along the way.

A Little Homage to Our Nasi Lemak Hawkers 🇲🇾🌿

I always find myself in a food dilemma — nostalgia vs healthy? 😜

Nostalgia wins, hands down! ❤️

But better still, when we can recreate those cherished flavours in a healthier way — without losing the soul of the dish.

The best of both worlds❣️

My heart has always gone out to our hawkers — up early, working over hot stoves, day after day, earning an honest living while feeding generations of Malaysians. Behind something as familiar as a packet of Nasi Lemak is so much hard work, skill and dedication.

So this is my little homage to them. ❤️

The very first time I tasted Sambal Ikan Bilis, at the age of 7, was at the home of my father’s socialist comrade, Uncle Bong Karim, in Alor Gajah, Melaka❣️

Lovingly prepared by Uncle Bong Karim’s wife,Bibi, over a wood fire, that sambal had a flavour I have never forgotten.

The aroma, the taste and, above all, the love that went into preparing it have stayed with me all these years. 🙏🏽❤️

Some flavours never leave us. They become part of who we are.

That, to me, is the beauty of food and nostalgia.❤️❤️❤️

Secebis Penghargaan Buat Para Penjaja Nasi Lemak Kita 🇲🇾🌿

Saya sering berdepan dengan dilema apabila berbicara tentang makanan — nostalgia atau pemakanan sihat? 😜

Nostalgia tetap menang tanpa ragu-ragu!

Kali pertama saya menikmati sambal ikan bilis adalah di rumah sahabat seperjuangan sosialis ayah saya, Pakcik Bong Karim, di Alor Gajah, Melaka.

Sambal itu dimasak dengan penuh kasih sayang oleh Bibi, menggunakan dapur kayu api. Haruman dan keenakan sambal tersebut kekal terpahat dalam ingatan saya hingga ke hari ini.

Ada rasa yang tidak pernah luput ditelan zaman. ❤️🙏🏽

The rice and sambal here are from CHAMPUR — my own attempt at recreating those familiar flavours at home.

There’s something special about eating Nasi Lemak off a banana leaf 🌿

***Far from perfect — the wrapping, I’m still learning, still experimenting… always a work in progress. And I’m quite happy with that.❤️❤️❤️

Ode to our favorite bookstores on National Bookstore Day in the UK- bookstores are an essential part of any itinerary when we travel to cities and we love to discover the independent ones ranging from the smaller ones to those that are staples to locals.
