𝒜𝒷𝑜𝓊𝓉 𝓉𝒽𝑒 𝓈𝑜𝓃𝑔:

I wrote ‘Rangirua’ while living in Aotearoa NZ back in 2023, moving through some uncertainty about whether to stay in New Zealand or return home to Australia. The title is a kupu (word) in te reo Māori which means ‘confusion’. Rangirua speaks to confusion and uncertainty, while its literal definition “two skies” mirrored the song’s central tension: two homes, two possible futures, and a life suspended between them. I could not speak to the power of this song without first acknowledging the incredible mana and wairua of te ao Māori and the kaumātua (elders) who gave their time, energy and knowledge throughout the journey of living on the motu. As a Pākehā (white person) I understand that it is a deep privilege to learn from and participate in this incredible culture.

l began producing this song back in 2023, tracking instruments and vocals at various studios with some wonderful friends & bandmates. I brought the stems to Yianni in early 2026 with about %65 of them finished, and from that point on, he proceeded to breathe integral life into the project through his bass/guitar playing, synths, plugins, vocals (he’ll chuckle at me for including this) and overall wizardry. I would often bounce him field samples and within 4 minutes he would have distilled the little sparkly parts of them (and the landscapes they were recorded in) with such reverence and care.
