Good morning! I’m excited to announce preorders for “Imperatives”—my first album under the Double Black Eye moniker. Imperatives was recorded with @beaunoise in July 2025 at @tiny.telephone in Oakland, CA. It was one of the best musical experiences of my life, and I think it's my best work yet.

Q&A with John Vanderslice (Tiny Telephone). “We started going to sex clubs—and I never in a million years thought I’d be going to a sex club. Even though I’m a social libertarian and I’m like, ‘Do whatever you want,’ I just never thought that would be part of my life.” Check it out:

I recently framed this and hung it in what better place than our green kitchen next to a wonderful print from La Linterna in Calí that follows the wildlife theme. With today being the 26th birthday of this album that lead me to revisit it (and the other 2 JTB albums... as if they aren't in regular rotation once one of the songs pops into my head and sends me down that path), I thought to share this photo along with some thoughts.

I remember first hearing this album with songs like Empty Picture Frame, Milk and Apples or Little Light sticking into my brain when I was no older than 14 so about a year after this album was released into the world. I certainly had exposure to Orange Rhyming Dictionary at that point as well and just became obsessed with the words and music of this band. It wasn't until a few years into this obsession did I finally have the opportunity to see them live, driving the 2 something hours down to Salt Lake and 2 something hours back to Pocatello in the summer of 2003. This concert is crystallized in my mind as if I knew it wasn't just a "that was great, see you next tour" kind of show. Because there wouldn't be a next tour. I had bought this poster off someone on eBay some time before and carried it with me to show in hopes of getting it signed and to share my appreciation for the band with the band. They were so kind and gracious to sign this slightly tattered, over-folded, wall-worn poster that has since spent years on my bedroom walls, tucked in a portfolio through moves or the record sleeve until now: hung prominently in my family's kitchen.

That summer and this concert (where I also met and started a now 20+ year friendship with then-opener @johnvanderslice ) really cracked open my mind when it came to the power of live music & the connections we can make through music across time and space. I can listen to this record and transport myself back while being comfortably seated in my present. I love this band and their music and I am so happy to have experienced them live, if but only once. Happy 26th to one of the three perfect JTB records.

Bandcamp Friday is behind us now but I still haven't managed to even import my purchases into iTunes yet. Nevertheless, they should be shouted out, as there is much worth discovering. So, here's what I got last week:

• @ttuummyy_ - Angel as Fallen Leaves
-- tumy's "meadow black metal" is this unquantifiable thing that, while I didn't get it at first, I couldn't get out of my head.

• @johnvanderslice - FOCUS
-- Sometimes it takes setting down new roots to bring one back to one's own. The new JV album feels familiar, but with a new perspective added by @mariaoffbrand

• @oculiquetzal - Homages to the Fallen
-- Jazz improv is an unwieldy beast, often interesting, but not always digestible. The Quetzal Tirado Unit releases always feature some magic that makes them feel compelling as cohesive works, while still capturing the excitement of the unexpected.

• @sevlezu - Blood Conscript
-- I am waiting for the new @sonjaphilly record with great impatience, with the recent @belexum still ringing in my ears. So what better combination than this?!

• Huremic (@parannoul ) - No Dancing Allowed
-- A cutting response to the powers that be who suspended a club's licence for two months because the audience danced. Try not to now.

• @underdark_uk - O Come Forth Annihilation
-- Underdark should need no introduction by now. And should need little motivation to pre-order this sure to be brilliant album.

• Shizuka - Heavenly Persona
-- Psychedelic music is often aggressive or bombastic or spiritual. But what happens when it's really really sad?

• Book of Sand - Occult Anarchist Propaganda
-- A record that's been echoing 'round my periphery for years, and that I am very tardy picking up. Ugly raw black metal for an ugly bleak world.

• @encasementband - Encasement
-- A debut solo work on @hypaethralrecords and @i_voidhanger_records simultaneously is always going to be something worth looking at. This act seeks to go toe to toe with North America's greatest exports (Yellow Eyes, Krallice, Thantifaxath, and Ash Borer get specific mention). And by golly, they've done it!

The second best day to buy music is today.
