Two nights ago, escaping ER. and I’m going back to the hospital today for some scheduled modifications and updates. Sometimes my doctors ask me how I remain so calm. It’s my family and friends, that’s how. I’m the luckiest person in the world..

Sometime around 1990, I arrived at LAX to pick up John Wackerman, who had just returned from a tour with Kazumi Watanabe.
When I met the group at the airport, I noticed they were all staring at me. I had no idea why. Later, I learned that management had decided to offer me a job with the tour.
It started as a drum tech job and ended up becoming so much more.
These photographs are from one of the two tours of Japan I did with the band. Somewhere along the way, the job also became an education.
Every night I got to watch Kazumi Watanabe, Bunny Brunel, John Wackerman and Kei Akagi improvise. I was standing there night after night watching these incredible musicians communicate with each other in real time. Then by day I was trying to make good on all the technological needs they had.
I learned a lot about chords by programming Bunny and Kazumi’s chords into John’s DrumKAT through the Mapper. I remember reading the Studio Vision manual while we were driving around Japan—and elsewhere—for Bunny. I was supposed to be working, but I was also learning constantly.
I adored Kyle Eastwood and learned all kinds of things from him too. That’s really what that period was like for me. I was surrounded by incredible musicians and technology, and I was constantly watching, listening, figuring things out and absorbing whatever I could.
Looking back, I realize that a huge part of my musical education happened this way. I wasn’t sitting in a classroom. I was watching some of the best musicians in the world play every night, and during the day I was trying to figure out how to make their equipment do whatever they imagined.
Kazumi used to say that being on the road was like a men’s prison. I always thought that was a pretty funny—and strangely accurate—description of touring. Watch the entire video on my YouTube.
