This is what building a home as a team sport looks like. 👉
Slide 2 is my favourite shot of the week: our interior designer and our glass contractor, on site together, ironing out the final glass details in the actual room. Not over email, not off a drawing — because that’s how you do things right the first time.
Around them, everything’s landing at once. The rear of the house is nearly complete — painting’s done, all the exterior trim work is done. The pool is in its finishing stages. And inside, an oak slat wall custom milled to the designer’s spec, with the return air built right into the slats so there’s no grille breaking up the wall.
None of that happens by accident. It happens because talented people are given the room to do their work — and I’m privileged to work with some of the best in the industry.
Which slide wins — 1, 2, 3, or 4?

What’s actually going on in this wall — layer by layer.

The cladding is Maibec cedar shingles over a limestone sill. Before a single shingle goes on, a metal flashing runs across the wall over the top of the sill and gets taped and sealed — that’s what stops water from running down behind the stone.

Then the part nobody sees: Home Slicker, a 3D mesh rainscreen mat over the sheathing. Cedar shingles sit tight to a wall, and tight means trapped — any moisture that gets behind them has nowhere to go, and that’s how cedar rots and finishes fail early. The mesh holds the shingles a quarter-inch off the wall, so water drains straight down and out, and air can circulate behind every shingle to dry it.

It’s a small line item in the budget. It’s also the difference between cedar that lasts and cedar that doesn’t.

Builders — rainscreen behind every wood wall, or only where it “needs” it?

Some of the best architectural details are the ones you don’t notice right away.

Take these stone walls at the front of the home.

They don’t run straight up.

They begin on a wider stone base, then gradually taper back toward the house and inward from both sides as they rise.

It’s a subtle detail, but it creates depth, shadow, and a much more sculpted appearance than a flat wall.

Details like this are challenging to build.

They require careful layout, precision from the masons, and trades who genuinely care about craftsmanship.

When everything comes together, the result feels intentional—and it elevates the entire front elevation.

Every once in a while, you have the opportunity to build on a truly special property.

One of my favourite architectural features on this home is the front entrance.

A double-sided stone arch creates a sense of arrival before you even reach the front door.

Step inside the arch, and you’ll find a covered vestibule where the front door mirrors the same curve, carrying the design from the exterior into the home.

Great architecture isn’t just about individual features.

It’s about creating a consistent experience from the moment you arrive.

Credit to John Williams for designing such a distinctive and memorable front entry. It a pleasure bringing the vision to life.

Drywall doesn’t lie. It’s not exciting to look at, BUT…

You can already feel where this one is going. #ProjectCopes is about to be full of colour, character, and details that make you look twice.

More to come. So much more.

One of my favourite features in this home is the main floor guest suite.

Tucked away from the main living areas, it offers guests their own private space complete with a walk-in closet and full ensuite.

It’s great for visiting family and friends today.

But it’s also one of those design decisions that adds flexibility for the future.

Whether it’s aging parents, long-term guests, or even aging in place down the road, having a bedroom, bathroom, and closet on the main floor creates options.

Good design isn’t just about how a home works today.

It’s about how it can work 10 or 20 years from now too.

Most people won’t even notice this…

And that’s exactly the point.

The architect introduced this wing wall off the front of the house to hide the mechanicals—AC units, meters, all the stuff that can quietly ruin a clean elevation.

From the street, you just see a well-composed façade.
No clutter. No distractions.

This is what good design looks like:
Solving functional problems before they become visual ones.

It’s a small move—but it makes a big difference.

Most people won’t notice this… but this is where the quality is.

In this walkthrough I’m focusing on a few key exterior masonry details that really tie the front of the house together.

– The sill band that runs along part of the front facade and integrates directly into the front door sill. The top of that sill band is the exact same elevation as the door sill—so everything lines up clean and intentional.
– And a really nice front water feature—a small fountain integrated right into the porch area. It’s going to add a bit of tranquillity when you walk up to the home and when guests arrive.

These are the kinds of details that start on paper—this is the architect’s vision—and our job on site is to bring it to life exactly as intended.

That level of alignment doesn’t happen by chance. It takes coordination, planning, and execution.

This is the stuff happening under the wrap… and it’s what separates a decent build from a tight one.

Details matter.

Small detail—but this is where a good mason really shows.

We’re looking at a radiused stone wing here, and he already had the heights and transitions completely dialed. I’m just walking it with him and making sure everything ties in.

When the details are thought through like this, the whole thing just comes together clean.

That’s the difference between just laying stone… and actually building something that looks right.
