'Mazurkas' (Major Revival)
@thejoycetheater

Dancers:
@jojocolumbo @iandebono @mariahgravelin @iamxstephen @olivia_mozie @jessgambellur @laurentwoms

Choreography: José Limón

"MAZURKAS, or as it was first titled DANCES IN HONOR OF POZNAN, WROCLAW, KATOWICZ AND WARSZAWA, was created in honor of these cities and their people in Poland. Performed to a selection of Chopin's mazurkas, these dances are a tribute to the people's heroic spirit in their revival after World War II.

For this historical reconstruction, the work will be presented in its entirety for the first time since 1964.

First performed August 15, 1958, at the American Dance Festival, New London, Connecticut by the José Limón Dance Company

Support for this reconstruction was provided by our Limón Innovation Partners: @howardgilmanfoundation, Jody and John Arnhold | Arnhold Foundation, Karl & Sonya Feitelberg, Christopher Jones & Deb McAlister, Peter Lyons, Andres Mata, and Karyn & Ivan Sacks."

"Inspired by a passage of José Limón's vivid and poetic description of Doris Humphrey's lost work of Orestes."

"Ambrose and I create consciously together and hope to encourage people to join fogether, all while embracing honesty as care. By cultivating an environment of presence and deep listening, we are able to return to our bodies, accept our loneliness, and make space to celebrate the truth of what is that our power as a collective is in our ability to connect, and that coming-together is joy (never without its challenge)!" - Aszure Barton

This work was commissioned by The Friends of Perry-Mansfield and @92ndstreety, New York as part of their 150th anniversary celebration, in honor and continued support of Jose Limón's rich 92NY legacy. It also received support from the @neaarts, New Music USA's Organization Fund in 2023-24, and from The O'Donnell-Green Music and Dance Foundation.

Happy 54 year anniversary and evolution of José Limón’s masterpiece ‘Orfeo’! Celebrating all the dancers who have lived in the iconic roles over the decades.

‘Orfeo’ premiered in New York City on October 2, 1972 at the ANTA Theatre (now known as the August Wilson Theatre). Throughout the years, this work that tells the Greek tragedy of Orpheus and Eurydice has been cherished by audiences around the world, set to the music of Beethoven.

Limón choreographed ‘Orfeo’ as a deeply personal final statement and ode to his late wife, Denishawn dancer, Pauline Lawrence. It is said that Limón never watched the piece after creating it.

Today, the Company performs this work with new casting with roles, a reflection of modern day storytelling and expression. In 2024, Lauren Twomley / @laurentwoms premiered the role of Orfeo, and MJ Edwards / @mjedwardsdance premiered the role of Eurydice- both making history in the landscape of American modern dance.
