Jonas Dee is a Vietnamese photographer based in Toronto. His photographs are made from everyday situations, with a strong focus on light, shadow, composition, and the way people move through a scene.

He is especially interested in moments that feel visually strong without needing much explanation. A gesture, a person standing in the right place, or a sudden change in light can be enough to make him stop and take a photograph.

There is a clear cinematic influence in the way Jonas frames his images, but the scenes themselves remain grounded in daily life and the things happening around him.

Daniel here, and for our first feature, we have JONAS DEE (@jonasbusy)

Jonas Dee is a Vietnamese photographer based in Toronto, whose work blurs the line between documentary and cinema.

What particularly caught my eye was Jonas’ editing, and how it complements the layers in his frames effortlessly. It’s done with careful restraint, emphasising the slightly surreal and playful atmosphere of his photographs, which I love.

Tatzuo, our other curator has said:

“He has a great understanding of shapes and values on top of his great sense for layering that really brings this organised chaos that every street photographer strives for.”

If you think your work belongs here, DM us or use the hashtag #YourEyeSubmission, we can’t wait to see your work.

What keeps us picking up a camera and going out?
Jonas’s photographs grow from moving through the world with a camera and responding to what appears along the way. Humour, coincidence and unexpected visual connections become reasons to stop and make a photograph.
Jonas describes what keeps him photographing in his own words:
“Honestly, what keeps me hooked on street photography is how it lets you catch moments that would otherwise slip away. A lot of what I do is just grabbing my camera, going out, experimenting, and figuring things out as I go. For me, it’s all about curiosity, finding a bit of meaning in the everyday.”
Which image in this series caught your attention the most?

frayme of the Week: Across the Table
.
There is something about a board game that strips everything back. No performance. No small talk to fill the silence. Just people leaning in, thinking, laughing, losing, trying again.
The photographers in this weeks curation caught that. Not the games themselves but what happens around them. The concentration on a face. Two hands reaching for the same piece. A moment where nobody is thinking about where they come from or where they are going.
.
Different cities. Different tables. Different games. But sit with these images long enough and the geography stops mattering. Across the table, everyone speaks the same language.
That is what this curation is really about. Not board games. The fact that humans have always found ways to sit down together.
.
Huge thanks to our curator @sereneteo_stillpictures for bringing this one to life, and to our featured photographers.
