Happy Canadian Film Day! What a fun reason to revisit some of my filmmaking path. Did you know that I used to be a lighting technician? I lit films, commercials, music videos and such for nearly eight years. And stopped doing it also eight years ago. I also do props sometimes and shoot documentaries (got an award as a cinematographer as well as a filmmaker). I barely have any stills from my documentary films, but here are some blasts from the pasts:
“The Robbery” - shot last year, @robberyshortfilm “Crazy Lovin’ (2006) - my first official short film
“Jenny” (2008), where I got to direct my own grandmother,
“Butterflies of Trip City” (2011) - a super ambitious fun film to write and make on a made-up language
“The Last Mermaids” (2012), partially shot underwater - here I review my dop’s footage as I stayed on the surface

Some other fun jobs - shooting a medicine woman in a forest, for Federal Govt of Canada (insects were furious there!)
Good-old lighting days with some of my brothers - I’m so glad there’s proof of that past life! And a rig of 70k watts worth of parcans for DOP David Greene.

And the crew. Without wonderful support from my peers, none of my films would’ve been possible. I’m forever grateful for the many creative and talented people who came to support my directing path so far. Thank you for your time and dedication! Thank you for supporting Canadian cinema!

Just a little throwback story about Country Time a short Film I costume Design a while ago.. It was about 2AM when my main actor, Ian Matthews decided that it would be a good idea to handcuff himself between takes.. My heart stopped when he asked me for the keys!! The keys I did not have. The keys of the handcuffs that was NEVER suppose to be taken out of the holder! 🤦🏼‍♀️ We tried everything. Everyone gave it a shot. We even had to hide the handcuffs up his sleeve for one scene until I somehow managed to get them off!! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻BTS picture by @alisonsharp Link in my bio if your Netflix watch list is running low. Jonathan Bensimon is a Director and Cinematographer, that decided to go back to his old twin-lens Rolleiflex in 2015.
As a framework for himself, he made up a small set of rules and started the Chromasketch Project.

Always bring the Rolleiflex.
Shoot one roll of slide film, each week.
This means 12 images and hardly to no post production.
At the end of each year, share the giant contact sheet, to expose all photographs next to each other.

What I love and respect about Jonathan Bensimon’s filmmaking background, is that it made him a true storyteller.
By showing us just one still image, he invites us on a much longer imaginary journey.
This particular photograph is my favourite from the series and today, it made my thoughts wander...Looking at this lady with the dark hair and flowery dress, at the softness of her exposed back and that tiny rose- I’m curious where she is going, in that big city. Is she on a mission to give or to forgive, to celebrate or to create?
