Thank you to everyone who joined us to celebrate the opening of John Chiara: Bay Panel at SF Camerawork. Seeing the gallery filled with artists, friends, longtime supporters, and new faces was a wonderful reminder of what makes this community so special. Also a big shout out to our collaborators and friends at @hainesgallery for making this possible!!

John’s @john.chiara_ relationship with SF Camerawork spans decades. Early in his career, the gallery recognized and championed his approach to photography, providing a platform at a pivotal moment in his artistic journey. To welcome him back with this exhibition feels especially meaningful, as a celebration of his remarkable practice, and also as a reflection of SF Camerawork’s enduring commitment to supporting artists over the course of their careers.

Next up is the artist talk scheduled for July 18th, 2 - 3:30 pm. We hope you’ll visit the exhibition in the weeks ahead and experience Bay Panel in person.

This is the final week to experience SECOND HOLE SECOND WAVE, the 2026 MFA Thesis Exhibition featuring work by Alexa Burrell, Vincent Chong, Enam Gbewonyo, Hudson Hatfield, and Bailey Scieszka. ✨

Working across sculpture, installation, video, painting, photography, and textiles, these artists return to familiar forms, images, materials, and histories. Rather than treating the past as fixed, they approach it as something still active, something that continues to shape how people move through the world, how they are seen, and how they make meaning. Together, their works imagine other openings, other futures, and another way through.

On view through June 4!
Stanford Art Gallery, 419 Lasuen Mall
Open weekdays, 12–5pm
Curated by Jonathan Calm
Free & open to the public

The exhibition will also reopen for one final viewing during Stanford Commencement on June 14.

Don’t miss the culmination of two years of research, experimentation, and artmaking by this graduating MFA cohort. 🎓🪄

I am so proud of my two friends Enam Gbewonyo @enamgd and Alexa Burrell @fogapocalypse! They have completed their MFA degrees at Stanford University and recently presented their spectacular thesis projects at the SECOND HOLE SECOND WAVE: 2026 MFA Thesis Exhibition which runs through June 4 at the Stanford Art Gallery. Come back to my Instagram soon as I plan to do a comprehensive reel on the whole show! For now, enjoy these happy image of opening night with Enam and Alexa. Their works are absolutely off-the-charts gorgeous. In the first image I am with Alexa, Enam and exhibition curator Jonathan Calm. @jonathancalm is a significant visual artist, curator and Stanford professor!

Enam Gbewonyo is a British-Ghanaian textile and performance artist and curator whose work explores identity, particularly Black womanhood, and the healing power of craft. Through performance, she creates spaces for reflection and healing while confronting the lasting impact of racism, sexism, and colonial legacies. She is a recipient of the 2022 Henry Moore Foundation @henrymoorefdn_grants Artist Award and winner of the 2022 Dentons Art Prize. Her residencies and fellowships include Black Rock Senegal @blackrocksenegal , the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts @bemiscenter , and Fondation H Madagascar. Enam is represented by @art_tafeta in London.

Alexa Burrell is a multidisciplinary artist and composer based in the San Francisco Bay Area whose immersive video, sound, and mixed-media installations center Black queer feminist experience, environmental change, and speculative world-building. Working across video, sound, sculpture, photography, animation, and performance, her practice is informed by Afro-futurist and hauntological aesthetics. Performing musically as LEXAGON, she creates experimental soundscapes using field recordings, handmade instruments, clarinet, and voice to explore memory, ancestral trauma, and intergenerational healing. Burrell has exhibited and performed widely across the Bay Area and is the recipient of the 2018 Soundwave Festival Buzz Award and the Alternative Exposure Grant.

Jonathan Calm, “To Wherever, Forever: Archives of Absence”
by Patricia Albers
de Saisset Museum, Santa Clara University

Artwork: Jonathan Calm, “Ghost Ship,” 2026, archival pigment print.

Jonathan Calm’s photography addresses the diminution of Black Americans’ automobility and, more broadly, the structures and practices that impede their fair access to decent land, a safe home, the freedom to hop in a car and hit the road.

Feeling Nostalgic?

Carpe Diem: Select Alumni in the Visual Arts is a group exhibition featuring the work of twelve Montclair alumni. Their works engage memory, identity, material, and place. Across painting, photography, textiles, video, sound, and mixed media, they explore how personal and collective histories are carried through the body, through objects, through gesture, and through time. Some dwell in abstraction and process; others return to portraiture, narrative, and community as sites of meaning.

Come see the featured works in person or on our free digital guide on @BloombergConnects

Admission to the Segal Gallery is free, open to the public. We're open Tue – Fri, 12 – 4 pm.

3 great shows and 3 great events at the de Saisset Museum at Santa Clara University on Wednesday, April 8. Thanks to director and chief curator @ciaraennis5 for organizing the program and for leading the walk-through with @jonathancalm for his powerful show “To Wherever, Forever.” WOW! Also moved to see Diane Jonte-Pace and revisit the work of @davidafricapace and see the important photographs from their collection now at the museum. Another great PhotoCarmel event! And I forgot how beautiful the Santa Clara campus is…and bonus black squirrel sighting amidst the lush grounds! 😍 @desaisset @centerphotographicart @ann_jastrab @stephen_albair #desaissetmuseum #santaclara #photocarmel #photography #davidpacephotography

🎉Tonight! Join us in celebrating our fourth Santa Clara University x LAP Fellow, Jonathan Calm (’19 Visual Arts Fellow), at the opening reception for his joint exhibition 𝘛𝘰 𝘞𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳, 𝘍𝘰𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳: 𝘈𝘳𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘈𝘣𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 & 𝘚𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘗𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘢𝘨𝘦!

📍 TONIGHT'S SCHEDULE:
• 4-5pm: Reception at Edward M. Dowd Art and Art History Building, Lobby
• 5-7pm: Reception at de Saisset Museum
• 5:30pm: Artist Talk at de Saisset Museum

The exhibition is split between two venues at Santa Clara University—the de Saisset Museum and the Art & Art History Department Gallery. Through photography, video, embroidery, and installation, Calm reflects on the politics of travel and belonging, revealing how beauty and exclusion coexist within the same terrain. 𝘈𝘳𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘈𝘣𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 at the de Saisset Museum features 𝘚𝘶𝘯𝘴𝘦𝘵 𝘛𝘰𝘸𝘯𝘴 and 𝘋𝘳𝘰𝘸𝘯𝘦𝘥 𝘛𝘰𝘸𝘯𝘴 (2024–25), two recent bodies of work exploring sites where historically Black Americans were forcibly excluded—through racial terror, legal threats, or state-led displacement. These works emerge from Calm's ongoing travels for 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘎𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘉𝘰𝘰𝘬 (2016-) series, where travelling the road itself reveals patterns of erasure far beyond the manifest meaning of guidebook's listings. A selection of works from 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘎𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘉𝘰𝘰𝘬 series are featured in the Art & Art History Department Gallery’s 𝘚𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘗𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘢𝘨𝘦.

𝘚𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘗𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘢𝘨𝘦 is on view through February 20, 2026; 𝘈𝘳𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘈𝘣𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 is on view through June 13, 2026
