POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

A decade is made up of more than milestones. It is made up of people, conversations, encounters and moments that become part of a shared story.

The RAI@10 dinner was a gathering of many of those moments. Beyond the speeches and presentations, there was also the simple joy of being together. Of meeting people whose paths have crossed with RAI over the years, catching up, sharing a meal and taking a moment to celebrate the journey.

These moments remind us that what sustains a creative community is not only the work, but the relationships built around it.

As we look back on ten years, we celebrate not just where RAI has been, but the people who have helped make the journey what it is.

Here’s to the conversations, connections and memories that continue to shape the story.

On the 30th of September, we gathered for an intimate anniversary dinner celebrating ten years of the Revolving Art Incubator.

The evening brought together artists, makers, patrons, collaborators and friends who have been part of RAI’s journey over the past decade. Each guest was intentionally invited for their relationship with RAI and the role they have played in shaping its community, practice and possibilities.

Beyond celebrating how far we’ve come, the dinner offered a moment to reflect on the work, relationships and ideas that have brought us here, and to look ahead to what the next decade might hold.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of the journey. Here’s to the next chapter🥂

OUT Residency Archives

Moments from some of the most impactful weeks of my life.

Having my first residency in Lagos gave me the opportunity to see the land I grew up in through a different lens. I spent my time connecting with history, people, and the stories that shape who we are.

Grateful for the amazing people I got to share these experiences with, the knowledge I gained, and the memories we created along the way.

A truly priceless chapter in my journey.

The Maker Incubator | Market Visit

Before an idea can take shape, there is often a journey to find what will bring it to life.

The makers stepped out into the market with some members of the team to source materials for the prototyping of their various projects, exploring, comparing and discovering what could become part of their responses to “The Sandal of the Future.”

From one material to another, the visit was both adventurous and insightful, offering a closer look at the possibilities, limitations and unexpected discoveries that can emerge when ideas meet the real world.

The making continues, one material at a time.

You know those spaces that feel like home and freedom at the same time? We’ll give you a peek into a little something that happened in Lagos this April…an inaugural “Curious Curating” Workshop, co-facilitated by Robin @rriskinitall and @PatrickOdimnfe, and co-hosted by @DidiMuseum and @AngelsAndMuse.

The workshops were the outgrowth of Robin’s PhD at @blaxtarlines KNUST, and her inquiry into what she calls #CuriousCurating. The idea is to move beyond flat, neutral, standard conventions for “white cube” curating, and explore its communal, artistic, and environmental possibilities. For the inaugural workshop in Lagos, Robin shared her experiences with creative communities in Ghana—and creative communities in the Lagos landscape linked in and alchemically responded.

Thanks to the invitation and co-facilitation by @PatrickOdimnfe and @MirabellaPaulcia Peach at @DidiMuseum… Partnership with Victor Ehikhamenor @victorsozaboy @simplyroli and team of @angelsandmuse… Collaboration with @JumokeSanwo and team of @RevolvingArtIncubator, @QudusOnikeku @oliseh.ig and team of @jrandlecentre, @Abass.Kelani and @LemiGhariokwu Studios, and @sawilliamsai of @thekokopelligallery… Not to mention support from @BenBosah Books, Kaycee @theHouseOfOphir Films, and @aaf_lagos @lagsophotofestival… we came together for seminars that traveled across the island, the mainland, and multiple dimensions.

The pilot #CuriousCurating Workshops were more memorable and magical than we could have imagined. They gave rise to mini-collectives, artist-institutional collaborations, artist-led shows and initiatives, and blogs, zines, and future books. These culminated in a “laboratory” exhibition at Didi Museum 25-28 April, which the group collectively titled, “Many Trees, A Forest.”

Watch this space for a series of seminars coming shortly…. Or in the words of our friend @tommywatomiwa on-the-beat 🎶: “Yakoyo” (“come and eat” 🥘)

The Maker Incubator | Day Three

On Day Three of The Maker Incubator, the makers moved from exploring and developing their ideas to considering what it means to build a creative practice around them.

The day focused on Creative Business Development, in a session facilitated by Mrs Toki Mabogunje @tokimabogunje, where the makers began to examine the structures and decisions that can help transform a creative idea into a viable and sustainable enterprise.

The conversation encouraged them to look more closely at what they are building, who it is for and the needs it responds to. They considered their products and services, their potential audiences and markets, and the ways their ideas could be positioned to reach the people they are intended for.

The makers also engaged with some of the less visible questions behind bringing an idea to life: What does it cost to make? What resources are required? How will it be produced and delivered? How should it be priced? Where does revenue come from? And what would it take for the practice to grow?

These questions became an opportunity to look beyond the object itself and think about the systems that surround it. For the makers responding to “The Sandal of the Future,” developing the idea is not only about imagining what the sandal could be, but also considering the people, processes, markets and resources that could allow that idea to exist beyond the programme.

As the makers continue through the incubator, each session adds another layer to the process, moving from concept and possibility towards making, testing and eventually validating their ideas.

We were also pleased to welcome Mr Kunmi Adio-Moses @kunmi_am @pssdc_lagos who stopped by to meet the makers and engage with the programme for the second time a row!

Our appreciation to Mrs Toki Mabogunje @tokimabogunje for guiding the makers through these important conversations and helping them think more intentionally about the business structures that can support their creative practices.

The Maker Incubator | Day Two

On Day Two of The Material Future Maker Incubator, the participants explored the question "What happens when creative practice is approached through the lens of innovation?" in Innovation for Creatives, a session facilitated by Bamidele Adeoye @deleltded as they began to examine how their ideas could be challenged, developed and translated into possibilities beyond the familiar.

The session moved from inspiration and reframing to understanding the people at the centre of a creative work. Participants explored empathy mapping and the underlying needs of their audiences, considered the practical, emotional and social value their work could create, and examined the gaps that existing solutions may leave behind.
They were also encouraged to stretch their thinking, moving beyond the safe and familiar to consider new audiences, new creations and bigger creative leaps. Through quick-fire sketching and creative prompts such as Swap, Combine, Adapt, Exaggerate, Repurpose, Simplify and Flip, participants were pushed to generate possibilities without immediately judging or limiting them.

The work then moved towards identifying each maker’s unique space, thinking about how their ideas could be shared or protected and bringing the different strands of the process together through an Innovation Canvas; connecting opportunity, audience, inspiration, creative direction, earth-friendly considerations and the risks that still need to be tested.
It was a day of questioning assumptions, making connections and opening up new ways of thinking about what creative practice can become.

We were also pleased to welcome the Director General of PSSDC, Adekunmilola Adio-Moses @adekunmilola_official who stopped by to meet the makers and extend a warm welcome to the programme. His visit added to the receptive environment in which the session unfolded.

As the makers continue to respond to “The Sandal of the Future,” these conversations are helping them look beyond the object itself, towards the people, possibilities, processes and futures that their practices can engage.

The work continues.

Maker Incubator | Day One

The journey into The Material Future began on 04 September.

Day One of the Material Future Maker Incubator brought our selected makers together for an orientation and onboarding session, and, importantly, for the first time, into a shared space of ideas, questions and possibilities.

We got to know one another, explored the programme and heard the stories behind each participant’s practice. Makers introduced their creative processes and presented their proposals, sharing how they intend to respond to this year’s provocation: “The Sandal of the Future.”

What emerged was a fascinating starting point for thinking beyond the familiar.

A sandal became a point of departure for conversations around movement, identity, memory, labour, survival, materiality and the future, revealing how an everyday object can carry stories of where we have been, where we are, and where we might be going.

Now the real work begins: experimenting, questioning, making, unmaking and making again.

We can’t wait to see where these ideas lead.

This is only the beginning.

MEET THE MAKER LAB PARTICIPANTS

We’re pleased to introduce the selected participants of the Material Future Maker Incubator, part of RAI@10.

Bringing together artists, makers, designers, architects and cultural thinkers, the Maker Lab invites participants to rethink the sandal as an object of movement, labour, identity, memory, survival and possibility.

Over the coming weeks, these creatives will develop and explore their ideas around “The Sandal of the Future,” drawing from their individual practices, experiences and perspectives while engaging with the realities of Lagos.

We’re excited to welcome this diverse group of creatives into the Maker Lab and look forward to seeing the ideas, experiments and possibilities that emerge from their journey.

We extend our sincere appreciation to our supporters and partners @tokimabogunje @michadek_ and @pssdc_lagos for helping make this programme possible and for supporting the development of new creative possibilities.

Meet the participants. Get to know their practices. Follow their journey.
