PROJECT X 2012

What started as a movie about one legendary house party became one of the most iconic party movies of the early 2010s.

Project X was inspired by real life house parties, with director Nima Nourizadeh and producer Todd Phillips aiming to make it feel like viewers were watching a real party completely spiral out of control. The found footage style, filmed primarily through Costa’s handheld camera, made the chaos feel even more authentic.

The film also helped put Thomas Mann, Oliver Cooper, and Jonathan Daniel Brown on the map, while its soundtrack, featuring artists like Kid Cudi, D12, and MGMT, became a huge part of its identity.

I organized my first Haiku Ceremony, bringing together people from the neighborhood I’ve known for years, a few new faces, and people I’d just met, all connected by a love for poetry, art, culture, and literature.

We divided into two groups and wrote haikus around the theme of friendship, inspired by Friendship Day in India. One of the haikus I found most moving was beautifully simple, which is perhaps what I love most about haiku.

It was lovely to see writers, filmmakers, artists, painters, and poetry lovers come together to write, read, and engage. A wonderful first gathering, and hopefully the beginning of many more, perhaps even opening it up to a larger community someday. Grateful to everyone who made it. @padmalakshmi Watermelon feta salad. Yum.

Today is 4/20. You know what that means… movie marathon. Here are a few picks for the occasion, though I could honestly list 20 more and still feel like I’m leaving out half the classics.

Not all of them are the same genre, but every single one has been unanimously voted by the internet as a perfect watch for this date. You know the vibe.

Oh, and one day I’ll tell you the story of how the Minis were born, and why this specific date and my dog have something to do with it.

What’s your go-to movie for today?
