T H E C O M E B A C K - E P I S O D E 8

The final scene of The Comeback series finalè is something MPK and I discussed for a long time. Michael and Lisa had written this beautiful scene that was a callback to one of my favorite and perhaps one of the most iconic moments from season 1, the “well I got it” interview. In the monologue, we see Val through the lens of Jane and in essence we watch Val perform through a camera’s lens as the viewer as we have for all of season 1, and most of season 2 and 3. However, as Val speaks, Jane, and hopefully the audience, begins to see Val in a different way.

So much of this season is about the potential end of our film industry because of technological change. To a certain degree, we have always dealt with this- from silent films to talkies, black and white to color, film to digital, practical SFX to CGI, etc. but this time it feels very different. Ai appears to have the potential to be an extinction level event and The Comeback dives right into that idea in a thoughtful, humorous, and uncomfortable way.

A big goal this season visually was to use different camera technology and formats to put the viewer behind the lens of each medium- To name just a few:
- social media shot on an iPhone with full wireless iris/focus/log control (a post on this another time)
- security cameras the size of dice with full control in log (a post on this another time)
- sitcoms shot on 4x Sony Venice cameras
- documentary shot on ARRI Alexa 35 cameras with Angenieux light weight zooms
- cinematic narrative shot on ARRI Alexa 35 with Hawk Prime T1 lenses
- Jane’s Bolex, shot on 2x ARRI 416 cameras on 16mm Kodak black and white reversal and Kodak vision 3 color negative in a 3D rig
Throughout the season we tried to use technology to help tell the story visually and to connect the viewer to the point of view of each specific scene. But, I think this is best exemplified in the final scene of the series. We thought it would be a wonderful sentiment to finish a season about digital technology ending the industry by capturing it on an analog format. —-> more info on how and why continued in the comments below⬇️

I was able to get my guy @tone_scold on camera lol. He tells us about a dope lighting sequence he’s seen in “Twisters” that got him amped up!
