🎶 100 years of BBC Choral Evensong

Today marks the centenary of a treasure in British broadcasting. Since 7 October 1926, BBC Choral Evensong has brought the sound of choirs, organists and sacred music from churches, chapels and cathedrals to listeners across the world.

Today, our CEO, Jonathan Mayes, and Chair of Trustees, Jonathan Macdonald, were at Westminster Abbey for the special centenary service, broadcast live on BBC Radio 3. The service included music by Howells and Parry, alongside a new introit by Kerensa Briggs, composed especially for the occasion.

For the Trust, this anniversary is an opportunity to celebrate the importance of the cathedral music tradition, and the extraordinary window BBC Choral Evensong provides into the breadth and richness of the UK’s choral heritage.

Listen back to this afternoon’s live broadcast from Westminster Abbey via BBC sounds..

Happiness is: immediately wearing my new sunshine dress, made of every yellow scrap I could find in my house; starting the week with a brunch date @thedelaunay with @davidrpianist; realising you and your colleagues have dressed as traffic lights; evenings @thecaledonianclub with the squad ❤️

This week our CEO JJ represented Cathedral Music Trust at the Association of National Cathedrals Conference, hosted at beautiful @bristolcathedral

Conference discussions centred around The Living Stones report, published by Theos, which explores the place of English cathedrals in contemporary society.

It’s an important and timely piece of work, and one that reinforces what we believe deeply: our cathedrals and churches play an essential role in the cultural life of this country, with music at the very heart of that story.

As David Olusoga so powerfully said in his keynote:
“We have a gift from the past that we are entrusted to hand on to future generations.”

It was a privilege for JJ to join the panel alongside Dean Mandy Ford, Eve Poole OBE, Dame Fiona Reynolds, Julia Porter-Pryce and David Olusoga, and to be part of such thoughtful conversations about the future of our cathedrals.

A huge thank you to everyone who planned and hosted such an inspiring conference, and to the many colleagues across the sector for their generosity, shared ideas, and commitment to celebrating and sustaining the extraordinary work happening in cathedrals across the country.

☀️🎶Two brilliant days in Oxford this week. Fabulous to find myself at New College Evensong surrounded a gathering of church music royalty -whether by luck or design, (many converging for the annual Choir Schools Association jamboree).

⭐️Super catching up with dear friends and colleagues, including my former assistant, the ever-brilliant Christopher Churcher, the formidable Jamie Burton, newly returned to Oxford after his years leading the Boston Symphony Chorus. Also a micro moment with Robert Quinney -the one person I fully expected to spot at Evensong, alongside Katherine Dienes-Williams (Winchester Director of Music) and Jonathan Mayes (Cathedral Music Trust), and so many others who represent the very highest level of our world; colleagues, collaborators, and brilliant friends.

And then the next morning… a morning coffee party for my dad (who doesn’t love ❤️ a morning coffee party) A proper send-off as he prepares to leave Oxford (after more than a decade) for Hereford at the end of the month. So special to celebrate him surrounded by people who’ve been part of that chapter -including the wonderful Mary Lean, bridesmaid at my parents’ wedding and a constant, generous presence throughout his time here. Photo of my Dad from back in January - on his annual trip to Dubai

Here’s to new beginnings in Hereford, where he’ll be close to family once again.

1 man, 3,000 miles, over 125 choirs, 2 wheels 🚴🏻‍♂️

Behind the exceptional soaring sounds of the free world-class music found in our extraordinary cathedrals and historic church buildings lies a fragile financial reality, cathedral music relies heavily on charitable giving and the generosity of donors to remain.

JJ is physically pedalling a path over 3,000 miles raising vital funds so we can continue ti support the sector.
