JONATHAN SHAW · 01/03 Antes de la tinta Hijo del legendario músico de jazz Artie Shaw y de la actriz de Hollywood Doris Dowling, Jonathan Shaw nació en Nueva York en 1953, en una familia marcada por la fama, los excesos y unas relaciones sentimentales poco convencionales. Sus padres formaban parte de un mundo donde la libertad sexual y la cultura swinger convivían con las contradicciones de la vida familiar. Pero crecer rodeado de nombres famosos no significa tener una infancia fácil. La ausencia de su padre y los problemas de alcoholismo de su madre marcaron sus primeros años. Muy pronto sintió que aquel mundo no era el suyo. Con apenas catorce años empezó a alejarse de aquella vida. Su camino lo llevaría a las drogas, la marginalidad y los viajes, recorriendo México y Brasil y descubriendo realidades muy alejadas de Hollywood. Vivió al margen de las convenciones, acumulando experiencias que acabarían dejando una huella profunda en su forma de entender el mundo. Antes de convertirse en una figura del tatuaje underground, Jonathan Shaw ya había vivido varias vidas. JONATHAN SHAW · 02/03 Fun City Tattoo En los años setenta, Jonathan Shaw empezó a tatuar en un sótano del Bowery, en Manhattan, cuando el tatuaje todavía estaba prohibido en Nueva York. Ese fue el origen de Fun City Tattoo, que años después se trasladaría a MacDougal Street y, en 1989, a St. Mark’s Place, en pleno East Village. Por el estudio pasaron músicos, cineastas y artistas como Iggy Pop, Jim Jarmusch y Johnny Depp. Con Depp, Shaw construyó una amistad que iba mucho más allá de la tinta. Según contó el propio Shaw, el actor ya lo llamaba «Captain Jack The Pirate» años antes de interpretar a Jack Sparrow. La imagen que abre esta publicación pertenece a Scab Vendor, el documental sobre la vida de Jonathan Shaw. En él aparecen imágenes de su amistad con Johnny Depp, incluido el momento en que el actor le tatúa en el brazo las siglas «OCJ», de Old Captain Jack. En la segunda imagen aparece Fun City Tattoo, uno de los lugares emblemáticos de aquella escena neoyorquina en la que el tatuaje todavía se movía en la clandestinidad. JONATHAN SHAW · 03/03 De las agujas a los libros Jonathan Shaw escribe desde los 14 años, mucho antes de convertirse en tatuador. Aunque durante una buena parte de su vida las agujas ocuparon el primer plano, la escritura siempre estuvo ahí. En 2017 publicó Scab Vendor: Confessions of a Tattoo Artist, el primer volumen de sus memorias, en el que repasa su vida, sus viajes y sus años en el mundo del tatuaje. También es autor de Narcisa, una novela publicada originalmente en 2008, ambientada en el lado más oscuro de Río de Janeiro y marcada por el amor, las drogas y la marginalidad. A estos títulos se suman Homeward Bound, continuación de sus memorias, y Vintage Tattoo Flash, un recorrido visual por la historia del tatuaje tradicional estadounidense a través de cientos de diseños de su colección. Este último es especialmente interesante para quienes quieren conocer los orígenes de muchos de los motivos que siguen formando parte del tatuaje actual.
