As many of you will know, much of our travel is dictated by the places the England men’s football team play. So when England were scheduled to play Czechia in Prague, we immediately booked our flights. Except the ticket allocation was decidedly lower than usual, and we came out of the ballot empty handed.

So what to do with flights to Prague, and no football? Well, a short side quest to Český Krumlov seemed as good an answer as any. I knew next to nothing about this South Bohemian town before visiting, and had left most of the planning to Adam. It seemed like a fun excursion, if little else.

We arrived just as the sun was setting (and if you’ve watched to the end of this video, you’ll know it’s a pretty spectacular sunset). The town felt positively festive, with glowing taverns and a bustling market square, where traditional folk dancers performed as visitors tucked into local delicacies.

The next morning we got up at the crack of dawn to explore. This was hard work at the time (the 5:30am alarm was not pleasant), but a decision we fully stood by once we saw just how many coach parties rolled in not long after.

We headed up to the castle to watch the town slowly wake, greeted by panoramic views of church spires and puffing chimneys, sinuously circled by the Vltava river. It was a view that made the lack of tickets, two hour drive, and early start all worth it.

I’m working on a full guide to Český Krumlov, as the town is so much more than just pretty views. If you have anything you’d like to see in it, please do pop a comment down below.
